Restaurante O Caranguejo was an interesting dining experience. Be prepared to be in the open. As a foreigner, you may stick out like a sore thumb, especially if you dine on the sidewalk. It’s a good place to interact with passersby, if your given mood calls for it. I was approached roughly 6 times during the course of my visit and meal.
The entree, Camarão Médio (shrimp spaghetti), was a bit bland, and I was apparently charged double…I don’t see 310 Reais on the menu for any given item, but hey.
Service was nice. He kept a peculiar constant vigil on my table, as well as shoo away vagrants at the super busy traffic intersection. Careful accepting pop-up pastry offers…everything comes with a price.
Overall, it’s worth trying for a new place to visit just to say you have. Admittedly, I haven’t tried their seafood dishes, so I may go again for it. This time I’ll request seating inside, despite its...
Read moreI recently visited O Caranguejo while traveling in Brazil. The food looked interesting, and the atmosphere was casual and welcoming. Unfortunately, my experience was negatively impacted due to a serious billing issue.
I don’t speak Portuguese, which made communication challenging.
I was charged for items I did not order or receive, including a completely unfamiliar charge that wasn’t explained.
I tried to resolve the issue with the staff, but due to the language barrier, it was difficult to get clarity or assistance.
The lack of clear itemization on the bill and no effort to correct the mistake was frustrating.
This could have been a great experience, but being overcharged without explanation left a bad impression. I recommend this restaurant take steps to better accommodate non-Portuguese speakers and ensure billing accuracy to avoid this happening to...
Read moreMy Husband (Brazilian) and I ate dinner here but the service was the worst. It’s my first time to visit Rio. I don’t speak portugues and my hubby is translating the menu to me. The waiter went back 3 times in 5 minutes like putting pressure to order. I let my hubby ordered first since he was translating the food to me. My hubby finished his order Filet Mignon with fries, while I am not yet finished with my food the waiter took his plate in front of me while I am still chewing my food. We’d been traveling a lot and this was my first time to have an experience like this. The waiter is like putting pressure on you to finished your food ASAP where in fact at the moment the resto is not busy. Not a...
