A Hidden Gem in Downtown Sofia

Hidden away down the backstreets of downtown Sofia is where you'll find a little piece of the American Deep South. We randomly stumbled across this place when we were exploring the local area a few weeks ago and decided to come back with some friends. It was a Saturday night.

We were treated to a two-man Blues spectacular. The lead vocalist and playing the guitar and harmonica, was Eero, and playing a hotchpotch of improvised percussion instruments including an upturned metal washtub and a washboard was Darry. The resulting sounds were so authentic that you’d be forgiven for thinking you really were in America and not somewhere in Eastern Europe. The deep rasping voices and scraping instrumentals, rather than coming from true born Americans, were being made by a Finnish guy and a Bulgarian. It turns there’s a very active Blues music scene around these parts.

Obviously there was some liquor involved, and you can expect a good selection of beer, wine, bourbon and scotch all at very reasonable prices. We all had a good time, including an Irish friend, who was loosened up enough that she found the courage to get up on stage herself to make her own musical contribution to the evening. The band or the bar staff didn’t seem to mind at all. It’s that sort of place. Suffice to say there were a few sore heads among our group in the morning, but no regrets.

Make sure you listen to a song before you decide to pay 15 lev for the gig and stay. We experienced awful monologues broken up by bad covers of half of a rock song before the annoying performer decided to have another rant. I’m sure based on other reviews it’s great at other times but late on a Saturday you may be in for a bad performance art piece. we couldn’t see gigs posted on their website so just went for it but it’s probably best to call ahead to know what you’re in for before making the walk from the centre of town. One of the treasures of Sofia's night life which I found by accident, but visited a few times later. Very authentic, the interior of Delta is a delightful blend of rustic and cozy, with dim lighting that sets the perfect mood for a blues night. The walls, adorned with vintage blues posters and memorabilia, speak volumes of the bar's dedication to the genre. What truly sets Delta apart is its live music.
