Romdeng: A Taste of Authentic Cambodian Flavors in Phnom Penh
Located in Phnom Penh, Romdeng offers a unique dining experience that delves into the heart of Cambodian cuisine. Its menu and flavors distinctly showcase the authentic tastes of Cambodia, with a focus on lighter yet well-defined spices.
During my visit, I ordered a variety of their dishes. The Tom Yum, while savory, leaned less on the sour notes typically associated with Thai Tom Yum, resulting in a richer, milder flavor profile that some might find less refreshing.
However, the Fried Goldfoil Barb Fish was a standout. Its incredibly savory taste made it an instant favorite. The fish was cooked to perfection, offering a delightful crispiness on the outside while remaining tender and flavorful within.
The Khmer Noodles presented a unique and refreshing experience. Resembling vermicelli, these noodles were served with a coconut-based yellow curry broth. The combination was both unusual and delightful, offering a light yet satisfying taste.
The Fish Soup with Bamboo Shoot also offered a lighter touch. The flavors were subtle yet refreshing, making it a pleasant and easy-to-enjoy dish.
The true star of the meal, and a personal favorite, was the Palm Seed with Coconut Milk dessert. Initially, I anticipated a somewhat monotonous sweetness. However, the chewy texture of the palm seeds paired beautifully with the rich, savory-sweetness of the coconut milk, creating a harmonious and surprisingly addictive combination. This dessert perfectly encapsulated the authentic flavors.
Romdeng truly delivers on its promise of showcasing authentic Cambodian cuisine. For those seeking to explore the unique and nuanced flavors of Cambodia, this restaurant is a must-visit. It’s a place where you can discover the genuine taste of the country in a...
Read moreTo be honest, I had a bit of conflicting feelings about the place! In general, we walked out satisfied—we’re a bunch of positive people and appreciate the experience for whatever it is!
Reflecting and comparing it with other food experiences in Phnom Penh… Romdeng gives a slight “yeah, good food, but something was slightly not the whole way…” feeling.
The pork with pineapple was delicious! A nice mix of sour and savory.
The banana leaf salad was okay for me, but my friends didn’t enjoy the fish mint—it has a very particular taste (I don’t think it tastes like fish, but I’m not sure how to describe it).
The fried pork was okay, nothing special. The side sauce was really good, with lots of Thai basil, which enriches any meat dish!
The pork ribs were completely fine, but just basic—no coating, just plain ribs.
Scallops were okay, nice consistency, but a bit overpowered by the salty sauce.
The salty crab was a first for me, so it’s hard to rate without anything to compare it to. It was okay taste-wise, maybe even great—but a bit tricky to know how to eat!
As I understand it, Romdeng is a social project, bringing young people from the streets into work life, which is just amazing. The service was totally fine too! (Was happy to teach waiter how to open a bottle of wine with waiters corkscrew :) P.S and wine was really ok too! The atmosphere was nice, and people...
Read moreThe food is great and affordable with a large selection of local dishes. The space is beautiful , however the atmosphere is completely ruined by constant ringing from some idiot’s phone that is connected to a very loud speaker. Every few seconds it’s ringing so loud I can’t talk or hear myself think. We tried to ask them to turn it down a few times but they don’t seem to care. I have had this same issue several times and I am really confused as to why they think it’s a good idea to have such a loud and annoying ringing blasting from the speaker non-stop and disturbing people while they eat. We cannot hear each other, we cannot hear the music. It’s totally non-sensical !! I love the food but that loud sound makes me want to go eat...
