My family and I had the privilege of visiting Calypso Hut Family Restaurant immediately after arriving in Canada from the U.S. for my cousin’s funeral. We had just come from different parts of the country, heavy-hearted, and were looking for a meal together to ground us. What we found at Calypso Hut was far more than food — it was comfort, warmth, and genuine hospitality at a time when we needed it most.
From the moment we walked in, Jerry, the owner, greeted us with such respect and sincerity that we instantly felt welcomed. He didn’t just serve us a meal — he made us feel like part of his own family. It’s rare to meet someone so humble, generous, and open-hearted, and the way he connected with us during such a difficult time will stay with me forever.
The food itself was exceptional. Everything we ordered was full of flavor and cooked with clear love and care. One dish that especially stood out for me was the chicken in the RUFF. I had heard about this classic Guyanese dish from my dad growing up, but I had never actually tasted it until now. Experiencing it here at Calypso Hut made it so much more meaningful, and it was absolutely delicious — perfectly seasoned, tender, and memorable. The meal reminded me of the richness of Guyanese cuisine and how special it is when tradition is preserved with such authenticity.
What touched me most was how Jerry went beyond being an owner or a chef. He took the time to share personal stories and memories with us, creating a sense of connection that went far deeper than just dining out. In those conversations, we didn’t just feel like customers; we felt cared for. His humility, kindness, and respect carried us through that evening and gave us something truly uplifting during our time in Canada.
Calypso Hut is more than a restaurant. It’s a place where culture, tradition, and heart come together. It’s where the food is unforgettable, and the people behind it make you feel like you belong. For anyone who wants not just a great meal but an experience filled with warmth and humanity, I cannot recommend this place highly enough. Jerry and his team deserve every bit of this...
Read moreWe figured it was long weekend we would go and have a good time need some friends. The music was very good but I would have loved some more variety there's only reggae and Soca all night I would have loved to hear a little bit of r&B some hip hop maybe. I don't know what their weekly nights are scheduled to play so I could have just been there on a Soca Reggae night... I don't know. Anyway no actual complaint about the music but let me talk about my service from my waitress. We ordered my food around 11:00 so it was two orders of chicken wings and two fried rice why did it take over 1 hour to get all of the parts of my meal. I had to ask the waitress where is my food instead of her coming to tell me we only have one chef and we're sorry but he's a little behind blah blah whatever whatever I would have been okay with that but she avoided coming to our table until I manage to get her attention finally and call her over to her table to only find out they had one chef in the kitchen. Again, no real problem but if she had informed me I wouldn't have been so irritated by the fact. Second complaint.. when I went to the bar one of the servers (female) continued to walk by me not once not twice but three times and ignore me and then went and attended to some guy at the end of the bar who came there way after me so I wasn't impressed with that after standing at the bar for over 10 minutes.... I did not appreciate that. One of the bartenders (make) or manager I don't know what his position was ...asked me what was my concern and I explained to him how this bartender kept walking by me without asking if I needed any assistance so he apologized on her behalf and gave me my drinks for free which I am very appreciative of. Overall, I had a decent time. I enjoyed the drinks except way too much orange juice in the rum punch but it still tasted good. I will return some other time possibly because the chicken wings were very very good. My suggestion to Calypso Hut...get some more experienced wait staff working there with the exception of the gentleman...
Read moreWe use to buy Calypso Hut years ago and the food was amazing. However, I am recently disappointed with the service. My son wanted their food for his birthday and we place an order. My daughter placed the order mentioned at the beginning of the call I would be there at 7:15 (I called at 6:30), at the end of the call the women said, “you’d have to pay by cash the machine is not working since this morning and your food will be ready in 20 minutes”. 1) she disregarded the time frame even though when she was informed I was going to pick up she responded not a problem 2) we are on the middle of a pandemic who is walking around with cash? After my daughter told me that I’d have to pay with cash, I told her to call them back and ask them if I can pay with credit card because I don’t walk with cash or my debit while working. Anyways in the 2nd call the receptionist said “oh there is a ATM here, you can take out the money when you get here” and when my daughter told her that I didn’t have my debit on me her response was “ okay let me restart the machine and call you back in 4 minutes if it works the order is still on and if not then it’s cancelled, is that okay?” And we said yes. 4 minutes later she calls back and the machine miraculously worked (I should have taken this as a sign).
We order fried banga, sweet and sour chicken, special fried rice and veggie low mein. The fried banga was FULL of oil. The sweet and sour had bones in it and was extremely hard (was never like this) and aside from the chicken, there was no sweet pepper or anything in the sweet and sour. The fried rice wasn’t bad, chicken on top was a bit dry but sadly the best of what we ordered. The low mein was horrible! Overly drenched in soy sauce. Over boiled, covered in oil. That was an illness in a dish waiting to happen. There was no seasoning either.
What happened...
