Chicko Chicken is a franchise that specializes in Korean fried chicken. Recently, I noticed a small sliver of a storefront open up on Edmonds Street in Burnaby. The thing that caught my eye was that there wasn’t a door to get into the place! As it turns out, the shop’s entrance is actually located in the back parking lot… talk about a hole-in-the-wall! Your best bet is to put your order in via their app as it takes a while for your chicken to be prepped. I opted for their Half and Half ($24) with a mix of their original and soy garlic chicken (my order also came with pickled radish and a can of pop). In all honesty, both versions were similar in flavour. The good thing is that they know how to make chicken. The outside had a nice crisp to it while the meat on the inside was tender and juicy. The following week, I decided to try their Padak Padak ($14 for half order) which is their sweet soy-mustard sauce chicken topped off with green onions curls and added a side of their Shake Shake Fries ($3) with cheese seasoning. I’m sure some people like the cheese seasoning on their fries but it didn’t do too much for me. On the good side, the chicken is just as tender and juicy on the inside as on my last visit. However, there’s not much variety here in terms of flavour. Overall, if you like crispy Korean fried chicken that’s tender on the inside, you’ll probably like this place. But you might get bored with the limited variety.

I first noticed this place on Edmonds Street- there was a sign but no door/entrance. Hmm… drove around and found the entrance in the back. You go in and order and take out. You have to pay for parking while you go in though. There is free street parking if you’re willing to walk a bit. This was my first and last time trying Korean Fried Chicken. It may just be me but I thought first when I got it that it was way overpriced and I hardly got any meat for $20+. Most of what I got was thick sauce (which was delicious) over a thick breaded( not sure) crust over the very small pieces of boneless chicken. The whole thing was delicious and probably fattening but I would have liked to get some protein in there since I thought I was going for chicken, not batter. The server was friendly. I had a hard time understanding all the options. I should have just ordered the regular chicken without any sauces— this is what other people told me when I told them about my exoerience.

Summary: simple menu, clean and friendly service/store, large portions. bonus points for being able to buy side sauces to try new flavours without committing to a whole order An amazing first experience - ordered a boneless full size original & split (yangyeom/soy garlic), with a side sauce of the cheese snow to try the seasoning. The yangyeom makes me think of a chili chicken sauce, but less sweet and more tangy; the soy garlic is a better approach to the honey garlic/teriyaki sauces commonly found on wings. My wife thinks the cheese snow is just cheddar cheese powder, but was a delicious sprinkling for the occasional piece. Will definitely hope to make this a regular part of our takeout schedule!

Was walking by Edmonds the other day, and saw a tiny sign advertising a KFC (Korean Fried Chicken) place in the back... Hmm.... colour me interested. Today, went searching around for it... couldn't find this location on Yelp, Facebook... but Google did have it on Google Maps. Reviews were good... ok... off to the linked website. I ordered online and waited about 25min, then headed over (walking distance!!! YEAH!!!). I ordered yangyeom, and soy garlic boneless chicken, an order of fries, and an order of shake shake fries. The full orders of chicken both came with pickled radish and a can of soda.

Ok... first thing... that was WAY too much food for 2 people. Should have done a half/half order instead. I was ok with the shake shake fries (cheese powder... slightly sweet), the wife preferred the plain fries. The soy garlic chicken was more flavourful than a few other places I've had it at.... and the yangyeom was about the same if not a touch better here as well. I always prefer the sweet and spicy variety... so having a more flavourful soy garlic option was nice. I love spice... so I tested the waters of seeing if the wife would be willing to go with buldak (fire chicken) next time. She seemed ok with it. ;)

This place is VERY close to me... so it is going to get a lot of ordering... thankfully not just because it is close by, but because it is...

The chicken here might just be the best from a restaurant in Burnaby, and we usually go to Hi-Five which we love.

We ordered half of the soy and half of the snow cheese along with the shake fries and it was admittedly too much for my partner and me -- and we eat a LOT. It was DELICIOUS and we couldn't resist so we ended up finishing the whole order. No regrets.

The food seemed to be ready quite quickly (fewer than 20 minutes) and this combined with the difficulty of finding the location is why I initially wanted to dock a star but the food was still warm/hot enough to eat PLUS it was flavourful, crunchy, juicy and filling chicken...so I'm going to overlook it. Also...they gave us a free pop!

Direction-wise: if you're coming by car, turn onto Linden and look for the Easy Park parking lot; the location is not on Edmonds proper, it's actually behind that street. There is a small awning that has instructions telling you to go to behind the buildings so just be aware if you are ordering ahead...
