Beyond disappointed to post this 1 star review. While service was great, the food was terrible. Overly sweetened and had NONE of the authentic Thai flavours /spices. And sadly, my husband and my mom both suffered food poisoning after this.
We came to Khao San Thai due to good reviews and a friend's recommendation for a very special celebration. Because of this, we were all very excited and we ordered everything on the menu that looked good!
First up, 2 orders skewers, okay, taste is okay, peanut sauce is a bit underwhelming in flavour but okay.
Second up, this dumpling thing that looked beautiful, like a flower, but the wrapping texture fell apart kind of quickly and the flavour was okay. A solid 2/5. Presentation is 10/10.
Then, the Tom Yam. Mom and I both ordered this. Then, mom and I were both puzzled. How come we only taste the fish sauce? Traditional Tom Yam doesn't even have fish sauce in its ingredients! Tasted like something we can make better from a can we can buy at a store. 1/5. But we're still super happy at this point and not consciously aware of the subpar food due to the occasion.
Then the mains. Mom had a green curry - very subpar. No authentic Thai flavours, like, no taste of lemon grass or any other special spices used in Thai food. And it wasn't spicy, just sweet. Now, we're noticing this sweet undertone to everything. Why? And the chicken was very sad looking, over cooked, not seasoned at all and just dumped into the green "curry".
I had the Delish Mussels. Sad to report, not delish. They're the type of mussels used in Chinese food, the bigger but kind of rubbery ones. Would've expected the local type that are smaller? Looked like a Chinese dish. Zero, zero Thai flavours. Also very sweet. For reference, I'm from Hong Kong.
Husband had the braised short rib curry. Again, very sweet. And the sweetness became a lot more apparent once the food began to cool down. Points for the short ribs being quite soft and tender though. Other than that, very blehh.
The rice quality was poor. Felt like mass produced "instant rice" type without flavour. If you're Asian or grew up eating rice, you know there's an art to making good rice!
Good thing we were here in an excellent mood and still left in an excellent mood! But you can't call this Thai food at all, sadly. None of us tasted the authentic flavours we paid the bigger restaurant dollars for.
The service was excellent, but we wanted excellent food đ˘ this would've been 2 stars due to the terrible food, but now it's 1 as my husband vomited hard this morning and my mom spent a lot of time on the toilet, and this was our last meal.
Sorry guys, please let me know once you've gone back to the traditional ways and maybe I'll give it a try again. As it stands,...
Read moreI ordered for pick up. I chose this place based on a glowing yelp review from a fellow SoCal resident traveling to Calgary. I am flabbergasted by the high reviews. Iâm sorry to say, but this is by far the worst Thai restaurant Iâve ever been to. The pad Thai was without flavor and was soupy. I thought pad Thai was suppose to be a dry noodle dish and not a soup. The packaged pad Thai from Costco offers a better dining experience. The pad see ew was better and had a hint of Thai flavor/spices. The green curry came watery and tasted as such. Much akin to flavored âessence waterâ with a slice of strawberry to give that hint of taste. Thankfully I forgot to order rice as the âcurryâ would have made it taste like light green flavorless congee. The pineapple fried rice tasted like dry yesterdayâs leftover which was overcooked in the microwave by several minutes. I am quite sad to leave a poor review but after eating rather than feeling full and content(doesnât take much as I am not a âfoodieâ) I was left appalled- like upset I actually ingested the food. This place does not offer authentic Thai food - Probably more aimed at those with duller palates. Did I get the toned down version because I chose the pickup option? I will never know as I will never go back. My recommendation is to skip this place. Donât end up upset after eating.
4 out of 5 for the mango sticky rice though- for the 1 star rating.
Service was fine - ordered 5 dishes and was ready for pickup in 15 mins (probably should have been a red flag- canât see how good food is cooked that fast)

Read moreMy cousin and I came here on a whim. She is from Stony Plain and when she visits she likes to go somewhere different. Her choice this trip was Khao San Thai Kitchen. Other than the always under construction 17th Ave, it was easy to find and get parking. Mind you it was after 6. We weren't sure how big the orders were going to be so we only ordered spring rolls and rice and green curry. The spring rolls were an absolute delight. The presentation was unique and original. So fun. And it contained Khao San sauce. The spring rolls themselves were really good. They were so crispy. So crispy all the way through. I venture to say they were the best I have had. And I have had my fair share. The coconut rice was fragrant and filled the bowl and an equally appetizing aroma came from the curry dish. Both were really great. My cousin found the curry a bit spicy. But I found it reminiscent of Thailand. It just took me there. Sorry I forgot to take a pic. We also ordered Chicken and Cashews. This was also very tasty. I really enjoyed this dish. There was plenty of both chicken and cashews. I really enjoyed this dish. It was a real comfort dish. Our waiter, who I would think was the owner, was so much fun. He was just a joy to be around. He was funny but helpful and he really knew how to make you feel welcomed. Thanks for a...
