THE BEST Bubble Tea I’ve ever had…. (Update below for star removal)

Now, I wouldn’t consider myself an expert in Bubble Tea, but I was introduced to it as a kid probably 25 years ago or so and have had them all over the place growing up in Calgary on a regular basis. I always found that they were pretty standard fair when I would get them with basic flavours maybe adding milk and always the same black boba that likely is store bought. I started preferring Jelly (which is also always store bought) because I would find the pearls often undercooked and starchy or hard in the center and didn’t find them appealing when they were like that. So I just assumed that’s how it always is because every place I’ve had it serves about the same quality.

Good…but I didn’t know how much better it could be…

Well enter Kung Fu Tea. This place has been hidden right next to me for several years and I never knew it existed. My wife brought it to my attention. Well I was blown away by the quality of their house made flavours and mixtures, but also completely blown away by their house made brown sugar boba….i had no clue that pearls could be SO soft and perfectly gooey and delicious!!! I’m obsessed with boba now… Then I decided to try one of their limited signature drinks, a grapefruit slush with milk foam and green tea jelly inside instead of the pearls. I was hesitant about not getting my new favourite brown sugar boba and getting jelly like I’m used to. Well…again, I was completely blown away! Even their jelly is on another level. It was so freakin good.

This place may be a tad more expensive than simpler bubble teas at other places, but the difference in quality really makes it worth it… PLUS they serve with plastic straws here which is just the cherry on top really. Paper straws are the absolute worst.

All in all, if anyone has managed to read this whole review, just know that this place is dynamite and I will be coming here regularly now and singing its praises to everyone I know!

Update: soooo I went here to treat my niece the other day and was super disappointed to find that they’ve changed out their cups to be significantly smaller than before. A large is now a very skinny cup as opposed to the ones you see in the photos. I’m disappointed by this because what was before a more expensive (but worth it) price increase from other places, has become...

Edited July 2023 - This location WAS consistently excellent for service and getting my drinks correct 100% of the time. And I did give them 5 stars. However, the past month has been completely opposite. Getting orders mixed up, waiting an absurd amount of time to receive my order of 3 drinks because staff are not paying attention to who ordered first and poor customer relations. Now they barely deserve 1 star.

EDIT - August 2023. Gave them another chance as the owner tried to make things right. Derren is an exceptional worker! He was the only person taking the orders and making the drinks when we arrived. Many customers ahead of us and many behind us. Lots of people wanted boba on this super hot summer day. He was apologetic and thanked everyone for their patience and the wait. He took the orders efficiently and made drinks quickly and correctly, by himself! The other worker was either on break, taking a personal or business related phone call, I’m not sure. She was away from the front and not helping with drinks or attending to customers for a while. I don’t think I’ve ever seen one person doing all the work in all the times I’ve visited, especially when it’s busy. Derren deserves a raise and/or promotion. And should lend a hand training the other staff members on...

We went twice within a week. The first time was great, we preordered by phone and picked it up when we got there, so about 15-20 minutes the tea flavor was very strong which we liked and the boba was nice and chewy.

Unfortunately, the second time we went, the service and quality of the drinks were not as good. The tea tasted watered down. We had also ordered via their app as they had informed me that it was a quicker and easier way to order instead of by phone. They had missed a drink and when told that, they put our order at the back of the line. If you miss a drink or make a drink incorrectly, you should fix it right away, not put the order in at the end of the queue.

We hope that this was just a one off as we love kung fu tea and the different tea flavors that they have.

UPDATE We went back again recently. The tea flavor was better, but I think we persnally prefer a stronger flavor. The service was good, we ordered through the app. Unfortunately, we were unable to use our point rewards at this time. So we are waiting for...
