My boyfriend and I chose Red's for our Sunday morning breakfast. We were originally going to go to the 4th ST location, but decided to try out the Kensington location as they had an app where we could make a reservation ahead of time.
While using this app proved to be quite successful, our experience when trying to actually get our table after was less than satisfactory.. After checking in, we were notified that it wouldn't be much longer for the wait. We got a notification message on our phone to be ready within 5 minutes as our table would be called. We waited and waited for about 20 minutes - the app was showing there were 3 reso's in front of us so we decided to wait further - All of a sudden, our reso wasn't showing up on our phone anymore, so we inquired with the host to see if we were still in line.
We were told by the host that we were sent a notification text and missed our chance (though we were waiting at the front door the entire time). He kindly told my boyfriend that he would put us back on the list and that it wouldn't be much longer. A few more minutes passed and more names were called to go dine (those who appeared to be after our reso). Confused, l went up to talk to the host again to see what the issue was.
As I began expressing my issue, I was rudely spoken over by the host telling me his issues with the app and how people have to check in with 20 minutes, which was not at all the problem I was trying to address. After he was finished, I said back that I felt I wasn't being listened to and expressed my actual issue of how we were waiting, but weren't physically called up to our table. It was almost as if because we got a notification on our phone, that after 5 minutes, we were just supposed to find a seat for ourselves..
I find this to be extremely awful customer service and hope the particular host can develop some sort of manners.
As well, it should be noted that the food quality is not up to par with the 4th st location.. If you're going to open more than 1 restaurant, make them consistent... an example, my hash browns this morning were basically mushed up potatoes, and I know I've never had hash like that at Red's..
Dissapointing experience to say the least. Stick...
Read moreWell well, it was a tossup between OEB and Red's today and we chose Red's...and I'm so glad we did ❤️
The atmosphere was perfect and the food was one of the best breakfast's I've had in my life! When we got there the prices were a bit steep and from what I could remember I could never finish a full plate so we shared a Croque Madame and a Kids Fruit & Yogurt. Our server was very attentive, smiling and offered great suggestions.
When the meal arrived I was questioning the potatoes because they seemed different but, oh my god, they were so tender and you could taste the high quality butter on them. As a butter addict and lover I could really appreciate that!
What is a Croque Madame? Google it. Just kidding :) There are Croque Madame and a Croque Monsieur sandwiches and Red's does the Madame. Actually, please google it and see my photo for Red's version. Bechamel sauce on a sandwich?? Yes!! Actually go there now and order one. You'll thank me!
The yogurt was also delicious and we were trying to come up with what the word is for a beekeeper... (Googling now)... Oh nothing like I thought, they are called Apiarists. Anyways apparently they strain the yogurt and then blend in a local honey. Wow.
The item I want to try for next time is the Oatmeal brûlée. Mmmm.
My server didn't want to be in the photo because... No idea why, maybe he's on the run? But we got this young man and it turned out fantastic. Should probably be used in an ad :)
I didn't see Red's on the explore ad and think it should be there.
Was a perfect experience for my son and my first day out together in a long time...
Read moreReds has been around for a while now in Calgary. They have 3 locations 4th Street SW, Ramsay, SE, and Kensington NW. As it has expanded, with carefully picked locations, Reds has managed to preserve a unique neighborhood feel.
Over the years, they have refined their breakfast offerings and the current menu has not only something for every taste, they have mastered the all important basics.
In my last visit, on a Sunday at 9:30 AM, we (2 people) got a table without waiting. When we left, an hour later, there was a line in front of the door.
I ordered the Harvest Breakfast Bowl with poached eggs, for which I was offered a choice of hard, medium or runny. I ordered medium and they were perfect. The potatoes were baked, not deep fried and the vegetables were roasted and tasty. A reasonable deal at $18.49.
In addition, I ordered a side order of multi grain toast buttered. $5.50, for a single slice. Good, but a bit much even with the current inflation. You can buy an entire loaf at the supermarket for that price. By comparison, a single extra egg is listed at $3.25 and a single pancake goes for $6.00.
The staff at Kensington Reds, as it is at the other locations, is young, friendly and eager to help with extra coffee or a quick clean up.
I will go back to Reds. The reason for this is good basic food. The menu has variety. They cook the food. It is not deep fried by default, the coffee is good and the service...
