Can we talk about a hidden gem?! My sister has been down to Calgary quite a bit this past year for conventions and within one of these stays, she stumbled onto this mom and pop shop. The underwhelming storefront along with the rugged outside visitors would have definitely deferred me away, but she insisted that this was her go-to spot for a quick Korean meal. Stonebowl has sporadic hours which makes me assume they cater more towards the business’ in the surrounding areas. Prices are reasonable for the portion sizes you get, and the lunch sets are a hell of a deal.
Spicy Pork Lunch - ($12.95) - Comes with a side salad and their classic stir fried glass noodles. My sister's favorite part was probably the glass noodles alone, whereas my crack on the plate was the dressing on the salad. Tbh the key ingredient is probably just mayo but idc, IT WAS SO GOOD. The pork was also super tender and flavorful, but it needed a lot more heat for us to label it as spicy though. I’m assuming it’s a flavor to fit the crowd around the complex? Seafood Pancake - ($17.65) - LOADED with seafood bits, a tad soft. Would have preferred a little longer on the pan to get it crispier but the flavor was bang on. Dipping sauce was also great. Pork Bone Soup - ($14.95) - Came with a side of rice and a side plate of kimchi. As far as my love of pork bone soup goes, this hit the spot. Spice and flavor were solid, while the pork was juicy and tender.
Service was quick and super friendly, food came out within 15 minutes! Great budget eat option with incredible serving sizes!Would definitely recommend this spot and be back to try their...
Read moreMy wife and I stumbled in here one day when waiting for our Arts Commons show to start. The menu is simple, straight-forward, and delicious. You order at the counter and take a seat. The owner was very friendly. Several times, I observed the female chef half-running behind another server to make sure the designated table's food was delivered all together.
I had the spicy pork bowl w/ the spicy beef soup. The pork bowl was delish and had just the right level of heat for me. The heat is throughout and not hidden in extra bites of chili. It's a pretty standard bibimbap-like offering - different kinds of veggies (carrots, cucumbers) surrounded by kimchi and topped with a fried egg. The kimchi was sweet and, overall, quite yummy. My soup was flavourful and, as a warning, did contain little heat-bomb chili bits. One got lodged in my esophagus and made me cry. I told my wife they were tears of manly joy. Don't think she believed me. Either way, I finished the bowl because it was yum.
My wife had the Teriyaki chicken. The sliced chicken thigh was cooked perfectly. Super tender. The sauce was a nice, thick teriyaki (not too sweet), and the corn salad had a honey mustard vinaigrette. The gyoza, served cold, was seared nicely and offered a delightful contrast to the warm chicken.
I'd give this location around a 4.5 factoring in the low price of the food + portion sizes. Overall, it was an awesome cold day meal at a reasonably low price. I'll definitely be back to try some of their other offerings. You don't need much on the menu when you...
Read more2018.04.17. My friend and I went downtown Calgary. We found the Korean Restaurant right across the street from Calgary Public Library. The name of the restaurant is Stone Bowl Korean Cuisine. It was our first time having food at this place. It’s a small Korean Restaurant, located at 615 Macleod Trail SE, Calgary. We arrived the restaurant around 12 pm which was right on their lunchtime. There are many people inside the restaurant. My friend and I have ordered different combos for lunch. I had spicy pork stone bowl with spicy beef soup. My friend ordered beef stone bowl with miso soup. After we ordered the food, we found a table to sit down. The soup came out the kitchen fast, but they were not hot. We waited for our stone bowls for while. They were well cooked and boiling hot. The stone bowls were very tasty and delicious. We enjoyed it. Highly Recommend this place for stone bowls. Do not order their soup. The soup was not...
