It was our first time at a Korean Chinese restaurant, and I found it more interesting than a regular Chinese restaurant.
The staff immediately greeted us with "an nyeong ha se yo" (hello in Korean) when we came in. We noticed that the staff were chatting with other customers in Korean as well.
The space was not very large, but there were many beautiful paintings on the wall, which made it feel like a gallery.
The menu was available in Korean and English, with detailed descriptions of each dish. They also provided a "popular items" menu with pictures for reference, but we chose what we wanted based on the descriptions.
We ordered Beef Bob, which was attractive with a lot of tasty pan-fried beef. It also included broccoli, baby bok choy, carrots, water chestnuts, straw mushrooms and a flavorful glaze sauce. The dish had a homestyle feel.
We also had Szechuan Jajang. I was interested in both the original and Szechuan versions of jajang myun, and I finally chose the Szechuan version. The staff kindly warned us that it was quite spicy. The dish was topped with cucumber, and the spicy soy bean sauce included shrimp, squid, pork, Korean zucchini and red onions. It also came with sides of pickled radish, onions and sweet soy bean sauce. I mixed the sauce with the noodles, and the flavor was slightly savory and sweet, followed by spiciness. It was great, but I would recommend the original version for those who cannot handle very spicy food.
I noticed someone on Google Maps reviewed it as "The Best Jajang Myun Place in Edmonton". I did not have others to compare it to, but I can definitely say it...
Read morePretty disappointing experience as I love Korean food and wanted to try something more home style and thought Rae Mi Hyang would pull through based on previous reviews. I was also hoping that with the simplistic approach that most home style cooking involves, perhaps the prices would be fair considering Korean food is overly expensive IMO.
Our food came out surprisingly quick which is good but concerning at the same time. All of our food was piping hot so at least we know it was freshly prepared.
Deep fried dumplings appeared to be overcooked and the filling was bland and dry. The Yu Rim Gi looked depressing but was flavourful and had a good amount of heat, though it was strange to see the chicken sitting on top of the toppings instead of being tossed within. Very small portion for a half order but it was the highlight for me. Beef Bob was very disappointing and tasted like leftovers slapped together in a quick stir fry. We wanted to get some jap chae as it's a must have but I couldn't justify paying $28. Service was good, very friendly and attentive. It's a shame it was overshadowed by the underwhelming food. I don't think this was enough effort to warrant a...
Read moreAfter living in Edmonton for nearly a year, it’s become clear that the Chinese cuisine scene here isn’t as vibrant as in Vancouver or Toronto. Decent Chinese restaurants are rare to come by, but Korean cuisine in Edmonton has proven to be more reliable, whether it’s BBQ or homestyle dishes.
Tonight, we decided to try RAE MI HYANG, a Korean and Chinese restaurant with an exterior that suggests a place with some history. The experience was a mix of hits and misses:
Japanese Myun: This dish was authentic in flavor and well-prepared. However, the portion size felt rather small compared to the generous servings typical of North American restaurants.
Kan Fung Gi: This boneless, bite-sized dish reminded me of Chinese sweet and sour pork. It had a pleasant texture and was flavorful, offering a familiar blend of Korean and Chinese styles.
Overall, RAE MI HYANG delivered a satisfying meal with unique Korean-Chinese fusion dishes. While the portions could be improved, the taste and authenticity stood out, especially in comparison to Edmonton's limited Chinese dining options. It’s worth a try for those craving...
