I tried Pokehana for the first fime last night and the flavour of the spicy tuna bowl was quite good! The spice level was perfect ( spicier than I thought it would be with the sliced chiles on it but I love spice anyways so it was no issue). If you're used to very saucy bowls, this one isn't really it ( there's no trademark spicy mayo drizzle like some other places) but even without it the taste is good. I really want to see this business succeed because I love poke bowls and the more of them in Guelph- the better!
My one criticism would be the portion sizes. First, I don't think the portion is large enough for the price paid. The container they package the food in is more shallow than what I'm used to seeing from other poke bowls ( think saucer rather than a deep bowl, so without even trying the food yet, I would automatically get the impression that there is less food inside for the price paid- and I was right.
They could definitely pack in more rice to atleast fill out the portions. I was left still feeling hungry at the end of my mealš. For comparison, Hungry Ninja nearby (and is a direct competitor) does poke bowls and they are very full in portions ( lots of rice), plenty of meat and sauce added at the top and leaves me feeling full each time.
So all in all, after my first bowl at Pokehana, the flavour is good but overall value needs work. They need to increase portion sizes atleast if they want to stay competitive. For now Hungry Ninja will remain my first choice for poke bowls, but I will be back at Pokehana someday to see if they've made improvements- and to try the other types of...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreOne of my favourite places downtown! The food is always fresh and delicious. The portion size is perfect, I am always so satisfied after this meal, they donāt skimp on ingredients, I always get a generous portion of salmon too! The options to customize your bowl is great too, you can add many fresh additions to make it your own, I love adding purple cabbage, carrots and edamame beans to mine! My favourite sauces are the creamy togarashi and classic shoyu, but every sauce is great. Tons of parking in the parkade next to their building, and the many parking lots and street parking in the area. The service is also excellent! If you havenāt tried it yet, donāt wait! This is a small, locally owned business who is bringing something special to our downtown. We are lucky to have this cute little poke shop...
Ā Ā Ā Read morePoke Hana is an incredible addition to downtown Guelph. The food is so fresh, seasoned perfectly, and the portion sizes are generous given the reasonable prices! The ratio of toppings to rice is perfect, and the rice is cooked beautifully (beautifully enough that the bowl makes great leftovers). Iāve tried almost every bowl and theyāre all excellent, but i especially love the customizability! My favourite is the spicy tuna and kanikama (crab) with added picked shiitakeā the kanikama does a great job of being an extra meaty treat without being quite as rich as the tuna and the picked shiitakes are phenomenal! The crunchy toppings are also a perfect addition to the bowls for some great texture. Absolutely love this place, and truly canāt...
