We went on this day 04/30/2024 around the 4:30 P.M. area, restaurant wasn’t that busy at this time. There’s plenty of private (plastic glass barriers) between booths, nice and cushioned seats. Also many tables to sit larger gathering of people, if need be. On Monday’s Halibut House had their special of Haddock & Chips, with side of coleslaw on for $12.99 each + HST. We were served promptly by a nice, friendly and accommodating waitress, she gave us plenty of time to order, but we knew what we wanted. We ordered the Special of Haddock & Chips each, plus a soda and coffee (they only had Instant coffee.). Our orders were delivered to our table in a timely fashion, the overall meal was delicious. The piece of fish was very generous and large, perfectly battered, light and golden brown and not remotely greasy. The Chips, also came hot and fresh, also cooked to perfection, golden brown and at various lengths (no crumbs). The coleslaw was kind of bland in my opinion, but every establishment is different. It was hard grated cabbage with strings of carrots in it, served in a vinaigrette like dressing (not mayo.). Soda was served in a nice tumbler full of ice cubes (canned pop) at reasonable price. Wife said coffee was decent for Instant coffee, the whole table has all the necessary condiments tray, white, malt vinegars and salt & pepper. Waitress brought us two huge squirtable bottles of tartar sauce and ketchup (tasted just like Heinz ketchup.). Restaurant started to fill up as time was moving toward dinner time. They serve alcoholic beverages if required, the restaurant itself is very clean, as are the restroom facilities (super clean.). Overall a very pleasant eating experience for the two of us, after treating ourselves out for a night out for a quality Fish & Chip dinner, with outstanding service and facilities. Highly recommend this establishment for a bonafide awesome Fish & Chip...
Read moreVery decent food and portions. UberEats prices are out of control but I know they're a necessary evil & take a 30% cut. The convenience was worth it, especially with the $20 off promo. Tipped at least 15% with the money I saved. Just found the fish a tad overcooked or tough & wish the fillets were a tad thicker although they were quite large & we couldn't finish them in one sitting. My partner & I ordered so much food, we didn't have to cook nor order anything else for two whole days. I think it was $100 very well spent as it was Daylight Saving/Spring Forward Sunday & everyone was stoopid groggy. Our friends & other people we know love ordering from here so we 100% went on their recommendation as I was suddenly having crazy PMS hankerings for fried things.
The halibut & rice set was my favourite. The rice was tender & tasted brothy. Almost ate the whole thing all by myself. My man especially loved the seafood platter with the battered haddock, scallops & shrimp. Thank goodness we had ordered a shrimp & scallop with chips on top of that. The cod & onion rings were solid too. The batter on the onion rings were so crispy, we damn near died of happiness. The coleslaw was light & crunchy with an addictive sweet/sour bite. The gravy was huge. Almost 2 cups worth. Mistook it for soup & was bewildered because I didn't recall ordering a soup. Lolz. Greek salad was very fresh but would have preferred an oil/vinegar dressing instead of something tangy/sweet/creamy.
I liked that there was a wide combination/variety of main & side groupings so that most of the menu could be experienced at a reasonable price. I still have half a litre left of the two total litres of very thick cut fries that were beyond generous considering they were sides & is taking forever to finish. Thank you for the...
Read morei know everything’s changing, but i just had halibut house at the end of january. ordered two halibut and chips and a kid’s halibut and chips. i had a couple friends visiting. they were impressed with the portions. i was satisfied, too, but i did notice a difference in the fish portion compared to what i had previously received.
today was even more disappointing. i will order somewhere else next time i want fish and chips. be advised that you will get A LOT of fries. when you take the box out of the bag, you will think you’re getting a lot. you’re not. you’re paying A LOT for fries.
the fish portions have decreased substantially, and the price has gone up. today i ordered a halibut and chips, and a kid’s halibut and chips. the kid’s halibut and chips had three little pieces of fish that were mostly batter. there was so little fish that i would be embarrassed to serve it. they must think kids are stupid and don’t know the difference between batter and fish. the other halibut and chips was significantly smaller than the last time i ordered. i’d say there’s 30% less fish, and did i mention that the price has gone up?
honestly, halibut house isn’t worth the price anymore. i know everyone is reducing portions and raising prices, but their adjustments are embarrassing, imho. i’ve raved about halibut house in the past to friends. tonight i would’ve been embarrassed.
if you’re new to halibut house, you won’t know the difference; if you’ve been ordering for awhile, then you’ve noticed the changes. i just can’t justify them. my friends have recommended other places in the hammer that are more competitively priced for the portions, and are just as satisfying.
this was a very disappointing meal to say the least. it wasn’t cheap, and i was...
