Extremely disappointed about my first and ONLY visit at Sagarmatha. I ordered two mains and an appetizer. I was told the wait time was 35-45 minutes. I arrived at the 45 minute mark and went inside. A woman at the desk told me that it wouldn't be much longer and that I need to pay right away. There was about 15 people in the restaurant and she was asking everyone for payment. I already felt extremely uncomfortable as there was too many people in the restaurant waiting and the restaurant was not abiding or enforcing any COVID recommendations. After the lady received payment she disappeared for about 10 minutes. Everyone in the restaurant around me was mad and I heard from various people that they were waiting over an hour and a half for food. One guy asked why it took 1 hour to get butter chicken which he was told would take 15 minutes to make- they were obviously busy so I kept waiting. It was a bit strange at first that all of the Skip the Dishes drivers were able to get their food right away, but hey maybe the orders went in first. Until one driver came back TWICE, and received his order right away after he asked about his order that was put in about 20 minutes before. I asked the lady again about my order and she said please wait it would only be 5 minutes more- try another 30 minutes. At the hour and a half mark, I asked again, and the lady came out with the food and left again. It was unfortunate that I had to wait so long but it happens, at least the food would be good right? WRONG. The butter chicken had no flavour or spice (literally asked for extra spice). It tasted like cold tomato soup and yogurt and there was only 3 small pieces of chicken in it. Our appetizer was burnt to a crisp and you couldn't even bite through it. NOT WORTH THE WAIT. Not only will I not be returning because of the food, but clearly there are issues with customer service. Do not tell customers that the wait time is 35-45 minutes, when you only started making the meals after they come in to pay. If you are busy with Skip the Dishes and want to serve them first, let customers know that so they can go elsewhere that will treat them the same or put them in proper order OR recommend customers to order through Skip the Dishes so that they get there meal within the reasonable time promised. There is WAY better indian food elsewhere in Hamilton with MUCH better customer service - will not...
Read moreSagarmatha Curry Palace is my favourite Indian restaurant in the Hamilton area; around our house, it's known only as 'that good Indian place'. We originally tried this because my friend obsesses over butter chicken, and when we saw it on the menu, it was like love at first sight. We've had probably close to 10 to 15 orders in the last year, which is a rare feat for any restaurant to earn, and the thing that just keeps bringing us back is the food. We've also been surprised on several occasions to get little bonuses to 'try' every once in a while, which led me to their butter chicken dinner thali, which is really good and something I order for the next day now. To be more specific, I've had all of the chicken, lamb, fish, shrimp, vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options on the menu at this point, and to break it down, the reason why it's good is also why people may not enjoy it. It is authentic to the specific sub-region of the world the dishes are from, and the flavours (while slightly sweeter) are normally adjusted on your terms. An example I find helps is that it's much like salt and pepper is to western cuisine, so asking for it to be extra seasoned or spicier. I'll agree that some of their tomato-based sauce dishes can be fairly sweet, but they also have a huge amount of flavour, and when I want it a bit stronger, I add some Sriracha, and the craving is satisfied. Feeling like I was slightly rough on their tomato dishes (which are always in my order), some of the best flavours I've had in my mouth, period, come from their tandoor options. I frequently order their 'Veg Paneer Tikka combo, and when I first took a bite of those onions and the flavour hit my mouth, it was one of the best tastes I've experienced. Also, all their rice is jeera rice, which is absolutely fabulous. In no particular order, these are the things I recommend. Read moreIt really is a shame because the food was good, but we were given a bread basket without asking for it. We ordered 2 plain naans with our meal and they came out with this as well as a bread platter. When we asked why there was so much bread because we only ordered 2 Naans, the server said it was a bread basket (at the time, we had no clue what this was). At that point, when we advised we only ordered 2 Naans with our meal, the server should have taken it back, but instead, he just said it was a bread basket and we thought it was house bread that came complimentary with our meal. We didn’t actually eat it because it was too much bread for us.
At the point of payment, I paid for the meal. I should have asked to look at the receipt first, but the server was holding it and handed it to me with my debit receipt.
I went to the bathroom, looked at the receipt and saw the $17 charge for the bread basket that we never asked for which we had made clear at the table. I asked for a refund and he advised that because the basket wasn’t refused at the table, he couldn’t process a refund for the bread basket. We didn’t eat it and advised him that we could give it back to him. He said that at this point, this wasn’t possible.
I spoke to the server that took our order in front of the man (Raj) that I was asking to get a refund from, whom confirmed that we didn’t order a bread basket when she took our order. Still, despite this and the food not being eaten, a refund was refused. I then asked to speak to the manager because Raj was stating “we are just the staff, I hope you understand this isn’t going in our pockets. I’m sorry for this error, but I’m not allowed to refund you.”
Raj went into the back to speak to “someone higher than him” and advised that I couldn’t speak to them and that he couldn’t refund me.
$17 for bread that we never ordered and never ate. Be careful when dining at this establishment because apparently they can add anything to your bill and get away with it.
Very disappointing. I’ve never experienced an establishment unwilling to correct their own error and refusing to allow me to speak to anyone higher, despite Raj and the female server repeating that they are only staff and can’t do...
