If you're a sushi enthusiast seeking an extraordinary dining experience in Edmonton, look no further than Moonga Sashimi. This hidden gem truly surpassed all my expectations.
Moonga Sashimi offers an Omakase experience, a prix fixe menu consisting of 22 courses priced at $175. Every dollar is justified. The quality and artistry rival that of the Michelin-starred sushi establishments I've visited in NYC, placing Moonga Sashimi at the top of the league in Edmonton.
The first thing that struck me was the intimate setting. With only ten seats, all arranged along the bar, the ambiance feels exclusive and personal. Reservations are mandatory, the door is closed prior to each seating, enhancing the feeling of exclusivity.
Throughout the evening, our attentive server ensured our comfort, continuously topping up our tea and providing us with outstanding attention. The service was impeccable.
One of the highlights of dining at Moonga Sashimi is the opportunity to witness the skilled chefs in action. It is truly mesmerizing to see their precision and dedication as they meticulously craft each dish in front of you. The chefs' passion for their craft shines through as they create culinary masterpieces that are as visually stunning as they are flavorful.
The presentation of each dish was spectacular. Some brought an element of mystery, with swirling wisps of smoke, while others incorporated an element of fire, adding a touch of excitement to the dining experience. The house-prepared soy sauce was a delightful, enhancing the natural flavors of the sushi and adding a delightful complexity to each bite. Every dish tasted perfectly seasoned.
Among the many outstanding dishes, the "Truffle Chopped Scallop Hand Maki" emerged as my personal favorite. The decadent combination of truffle and scallop, expertly rolled into a hand-sized maki, left me craving for more. It was a true testament to the creativity and skill of the chefs at Moonga Sashimi.
I wholeheartedly recommend Moonga Sashimi to sushi enthusiasts who crave an exceptional dining experience. Despite the relatively higher price point, every aspect of the meal, from the ambiance to the attentive service and the outstanding quality of the dishes,...

I have been waiting to try their Omakase menu. At a hefty $175 (not including tax/tip) per person, no wonder Moonga is located within ATB bank! 🤣
Having never dined at Moonga before, I had two concerns. The first, that the fish would all taste similar and blend together. The second, that I would leave hungry. I had nothing to be worried about.
The Omakase menu consists of appetizers, sashimi, nigiri, some extra items (eg. Soba noodles), and dessert. All together, there were 23 delightful courses.
I was really impressed with not only the freshness of ingredients, but with the thoughtfulness of delicate flavour combinations. Some pieces were artfully smoked, others with a hint of lemon or truffle. The fresh fish was certainly still the star, but the subtle additions of garnishes or sauce enhanced the flavour. The soy sauce and wasabi were made in house, and were so yummy. My husband and I both left pleasantly full but not stuffed.
The chefs and server were fantastic. It was fun to see everything meticulously prepared right in front of you. The chefs were very professional and certainly cared a lot about their craft. Service was fantastic. Unlike other reviewers, I felt that one server for 11 people is great, especially considering how tiny the space is. Perhaps easier with an Omakase menu where all 11 patrons are receiving the same dishes.
We also tried the flight of sakes ($25 for 3 sakes) and selected the two premium options and one yuzu. If you are wanting to taste and are not necessarily ordering alcohol to get hammered, you can certainly share a flight between two people.
All in all, I would highly recommend this dining experience, at least once! At $225 a person (including tax and tip and one sake flight), it is pricey...
Read moreHave dined in twice now at Moonga.
First experience was amazing. Minus the fact that they forgot to unlock the doors for us at our reservation time and that most of their rolls taste similar. Otherwise, staff were polite and professional. Sashimi and Nigiri tasted fresh and were intricately made/displayed. We enjoyed the experience of watching our food being made in front of us.
Second experience, was not as good as the first. We were seated in a corner with very limited space and it was very cold by the window. I could not get to my seat without running into the plant in the corner of the store by my chair. Instead of seating 10 patrons, maybe 9 would be a better number so that there is more space to dine and it wouldn't be as awkward for the waitress to reach us. As the store has very limited space to begin with. Service also appeared delayed, as they only had one waitress for all patrons. We were served our food prior to getting a hot napkin or receiving condiments.
I also found it really weird that they charged extra for wasabi and other condiments. In the other sushi places I frequent (Sushi Wasabi, Yokozuna, and Izakya Tomo) all offer abundant amounts of wasabi and ginger for each different dish of sushi/sashimi. However both times we dined at Moonga, we had only a small plate of ginger and wasabi offered at the very beginning of our meal.
Overall, I would definitely return for sashimi and nigiri in the future as it is closer physically than those other above mentioned restaurants. However for special occasions and more variety of food, I would...
