had good expectations for this location, but experience was a little flat. Service was OK, but the quality of the food was lacking. Starter calamari was under seasoned, and bland for our liking, and a couple of the pieces seemed overdone and quite rubbery.
for the main meals, i found the menu somewhat unclear regarding the flavour profiles for the foods described. Supposed to be Mediterranean inspired flavours, but the braised lamb was served on a bed of legumes (chickpeas, white beans, and peas) which sounded good, but in effect, the flavour was more Indian inspired spices it seemed, which really isn't something we like and would definitely would not have ordered that meal had it been described accurately in the menu.
many of the meals don't explain what the sides are - "whole fish" is just whole fish? scaloppini describes the veal, but what is it served with - nothing is indicated
The pork osso bucco meal was a surprise - usually osso bucco when i have had it before is more of a sliced shank/marrow bone style - but this was a pork shank served large, like thor's hammer style. It was tasty. Flavour profile was deep and almost mushroomy, but sadly the underneath part of the meat was not warmed through - it was still cold under the bone. The top surface was warm, but it definitely needed more time heating. The gnocchi it was served on were tasty, although a little mealy in texture. the portion was huge, so i left the cold part of the meat aside, and was full enough with the part i ate.
Creme caramel was adequate, although served with marmalade on top - which was a first for me seeing it served like that. Lava cake...... don't bother ordering it. one of the more expensive desserts and very poorly executed. Outer surface is too hard and almost shell-like that crunches when you cut into it. Inside was lava-esque, but the taste and the texture on these just weren't right. A real disappointment as lava cakes are not that difficult to do, and normally rich chocolate flavour. This was almost cookie-texture top, wiht a dense thick "cookie/cake" shell and small bit of 'lava' but the taste was way off
there were some execution fails on the items we chose. not sure that i would give another chance - wasn't satisfied with what we got as quality for the money that we spent and feel we could...
Read moreMy husband and I just had our wedding at Calvi restaurant this past weekend. I wish I can give them even more stars then 5!! I cannot believe how amazing the staff were from when we first entered the restaurant asking if we can reserve for a wedding, to being consistent in communicating through e-mails, they were super accommodating to our needs and likes and I am not even at the reception yet! The staff were incredible throughout the entire execution of the wedding including the preparation and the hosting during and throughout the wedding! They made our day just so much more special then I ever imagined. The staff are so incredibly nice. This is the first time I ever write a review online, I normally don't because I don't like being public but I want to go over and beyond like they did for us! Oh and the food, omg, you cannot get food like that at a hall! The plates were beautiful, absolutely delicious and they did not skimp out! The price we paid made a lot of sense! You will NOT be disappointed!! Thank you to everybody at Calvi restaurant for making our day the most special and most memorable day ever!! We cannot thank you enough! I can seriously go on and on, I cannot believe that was our wedding!! We will definitely come back on...
Read moreDecided to take a friend who was visiting from out of town for a nice Italian meal. Unfortunately we were disappointed. I ordered a veal scaloppini with a mushroom sauce and to my surprise it came with some pasta on the side dressed by a little green sauce. When I tasted the pasta I was disappointed….the little green vegetables on it was cilantro….the waitress said it was dressed with “ des fines herbes”…I know many people have developed a taste for this Herb but unfortunately I don’t like it. There was no mention of it on the menu. When I mentioned this to the waitress she simply replied that people Love it. She did not offer to replace it. My scaloppini was good but drowned in the mushroom sauce which was easy to scrape off. My friend ordered “pasta primavera “ which is supposed to be a past dressed with lots of veggies and no tomato sauce . This dish had some seasonal vegetables like eggplant and then laden with tomato sauce………of course she was disappointed…..too much sauce. Needless to say I will not return to this restaurant. It’s a shame because it was one of the nicest restaurants in the...
