I was used to a Telegraph where five to six years ago it could have been classified as boutique-like in terms of beer and burger combinations... It was stellar. Truly 5 stars. Many of the reviewers simply don't know what "was"...
My personal experience with this venue changed since then: every so often, I'd be shorted on my beer (E.g. I'd order a 16oz, and get a 12oz... I'd have to prove to the server is was shorted by pointing at the glass markings). I found myself pointing out such errors so often it annoyed me so I stopped visiting for quite some time.
The fair was good last time I was there (a few months ago), but not unlike any other pub in Lethbridge. This place is close to SAAG and CASA... Given the unique building and location, etc. Telegraph has a responsibility to be trendier. It was. It has the potential. I should be able to order a $20 burger with overzealous toppings (an egg, crumbled blue cheese, with a 1" thick paddie that would squirt on the plate when bitten) with a $14 beer here. What happened? The pulled pork sliders came with the best coleslaw. That's gone.
Brown's Socialhouse or OJ's shouldn't hold a candle to this place.
This place was never about "bang-for-your-buck value" (except for the cheap Sunday breakfast) . "Value" was in the unique experience, and the cost was in the food's ingredients. It was a serious treat to visit this place. Maybe the market and clientèle has forced the pub to change?
Still a great place to visit, but the 3 stars is a protest. I'd revise the rating with some creativity from the kitchen and diligence with...
Read moreMy bride and I were in the area and thought we'd give this place a go. The little downtown area was cute.
There was no wait on a Tuesday afternoon about 5:30. We chose to sit outside. There were a few other couples and it was in the shade on a very warm afternoon.
The staff was professional, attentive and took good care of us. The classic and bison burgers came out looking delicious and tasted the same.
The beer menu was diverse and had a cider my bride enjoyed. The two beers I had were delicious. Thankful for the large selection.
The downside was no fault of the establishment. Not sure how to be PC about it, but the state of the folks laying on the sidewalk nearby were like "Zombies".
There was one that I would keep an eye on to make sure he was breathing, he was a few meters from our table. His "friends" kept checking on him as well.
One approached the table as we ate, asking for food, the same happened to the couple next to us. One "Zombie" took an ATM/daily special sign and walked away with it from inside the building. Two of the young staff had to get it.
As we walked the area, we discovered more "zombies". They were all over the cute park that was across the street.
This could have been an enjoyable dinner date and stroll around the area. The food and drink were good and the staff was awesome. It saddened us that choosing to eat outside diminished the experience.
As an outsider, we felt bad for the area and the Taphouse. It is unfortunate this is happening to an otherwise lovely town and we hope for the sake of the community...
Read moreWe went here for my son's 20 birthday. Overall it was a very good experience. We would definitely come back! The restaurant is the old AGT telegraph office. They've done a great job with preserving the history of the place. The food, overall was really good. They take a lot of pride with sourcing locally and have a farm to table mantra, which I always appreciate if I'm going to spend money on dining out. Lots of local Alberta beers on tap too! There was a large group of us so I won't go into details on everything. The burger my son had was amazing! The fish and chips were great. The batter was light and crispy and not to greasy. The fish tacos were very fresh however it needed more seasoning. They were a little on the bland side but that's a minor complaint. One thing of note is the kids grilled cheese stated on the menu that it came with bacon on it, but we were told by the server she would have to ask whether or not it was. It turns out that even though it stated it was complimentary on the sandwich that it was not and it's because the menu wasn't updated. They should have compt'd it and update their menu. The one last draw back was one of the beers that was ordered was completely flat. We were told that it's because it was at the end of the keg and they never know when it's getting there until they pour flat beer. They did offer my friend another drink which was a Ceasar and he said it was great. Our server was very kind, prompt and professional, so all in all this was a good enough experience to want to come back...
