This was our first time here, and on arrival the staff were not at all friendly. We came inside and reviewed the menu and cabinet items. While we were doing this, I tried asking a fenale staff member behind the counter, about something on the menu, she just looked at me, turned and walked away. The rest of the staff were more interested in talking to each other rather than serving us, like we were an inconvenience. I ended up ordering the soup of the day which was carrot, potato and dill, it was a weird consistency sweet and inedible. It looked like something you find at the bottom of your sink after washing your dishes. The bread on the side, which we paid extra for was just that, a piece of bread with no butter or spread on the side. I had a slice of mixed berry pie for dessert and that was average at best, again no offer of whipped cream or ice cream even for an extra charge, which I would have paid for. My husband had a spicy grilled cheese sandwich, which he ate, but said it was below average at best. We had the largest coffees which were a good size, but no better than other coffee establishments in Lethbridge. The seating was worn and rubbed off making them look unappealing to sit on. The tables were sticky with the whole cafe and ambiance felt dirty and unclean. The whole place needs a refresh, new seating and just a really thorough cleaning. It wasn’t worth the $50 we paid, suffice to say we won’t...
Read moreThis place is the definition of nostalgia to me. I worked here for years - as a baker, barista and at the sandwich counter and it’s always held the most special place in my heart. When I heard Eileen had finally sold I was so happy for her but was nervous what it would be like next time I came to town. Covid happened so our reunion was delayed to this weekend..
But oh boy it’s still just as good as I remember. In true nostalgia fashion we ordered a curried tuna melt; a pasta salad and a California BLT. every single bite of each transported me back to being 18 all over again. Ran into some old friends while we were there and found out that all you have to do is ask for the original spicy grilled cheese - pro tip because if you know you know.
We came back today and got an espresso milkshake and London fog and yep - just as good as I remember too.
It wasn’t perfect - The one guy at the counter wasn’t the friendliest, they forgot the mayo on the California BLT but whatever - I’ve literally been there and it’s not worth taking a star away for.
The penny is literally the definition of a Lethbridge establishment. It’s legendary. And for all of us who have been going for like 20 years or more - we are thankful it’s still the same cozy place to run into your neighbours and enjoy some...
Read moreMy first time visiting was amazing! I met with a group of friends, brought my kids with me, and had a great bite to eat and a couple really yummy drinks. I decided to bring my hubby and kids there so that my hubby could check it out. Well, the cashier/server very obviously had something else on her mind. She failed to inform us that coffee was self serve, so I sat there waiting for my coffee while my kids and hubby had their drinks. My hubby asked for a pastry but didn't get it. We were not offered an itemized receipt, so we were completely unaware that it wasn't rung up. He ended up buying it after the fact. The food and drinks were great. And I feel like the service is typically better. Maybe we just caught her on a bad day and she was sidetracked. I'll give it another shot because they have a lot of vegan options which I really appreciate, and they're local. If I could make a suggestion, offer an...
