First time coming to Su&Shi Noodle Bar (I've passed it a few times but I mistook it for only selling boxed sushi, thus never ordered from them) and I found myself pleasantly surprised. A friend of mine treated me to an Udon bowl (beef flavor, though there are also chicken, seafood, and shrimp).
As I watched the chefs prepare the noodle bowl from over the counter I could see packages of vacuum packed udon noodles, bins of ingredients and an otherwise fairly clean looking work space. The woks were steaming and the floor unobstructed.
The bowl itself donned a MASSIVE portion of Udon (if you don't have a huge appetite I suggest sharing) and a very generous amount of beef broth. The noodles were layered with mushroom, bamboo shoots, sprouts, two very large pieces of deep fried tofu, chives, three large pieces of Nori (seaweed strips) and an equally generous amount of meat.
After sitting down and allowing the broth to cool I started with the nori. I highly suggest eating this first as the longer the nori sits in the noodle bowl the soggier it becomes. Taking some chives, and a small piece of beef I proceeded to roll the nori up like a sushi roll. The nori is not over powering and pairs nicely with the chives without emitting a fishy taste.
Next, the tofu. I found it a tad soggy as it had been sitting in the broth a while and whilst it soaks the broth up, after biting into it and chewing it looses flavor quickly and when consumed by itself has a subtle fried texture and flavor.
The beef itself, while chewy and sometimes portioned too large, had excellent flavor and didn't taste 'mechanical'. I was quite pleased with the portion size and the meat itself wasn't overly seasoned and paired well with the noodles.
As I consumed some of the noodles I couldn't help but notice they were slightly over cooked, taking on a very slimy texture rather than a smooth one. This is likely due to the noodles themselves being vacuum packed and I have reason to assume they are pre-cooked before being sealed. They pair well with the broth and the portion size is again, generous, though I wish they'd been cooked less.
Finally, the broth while flavorful contains a lot of sodium and when sipped by itself gives a bit of a bite to your tongue. I consumed half of the broth before deeming myself finished. Moving passed the sodium the broth does have a very beefy taste to it, though at times can have an oily finish leaving a 'coating-like' feeling on your tongue (which I assume is from the tofu's oils).
All-in-all the noodle bowl itself was pleasant and I would eat here again.
To address the staff, my personal experience with them was good. The girl running cash was very friendly, smiling and she took our order with ease. When I noticed another customer had left their bag on the side of the counter I promptly informed the cashier, whom stopped what she was doing to address me with the same cheerful smile, accepted the parcel and placed it below her counter so no one would take it in order to return it to the customer who'd lost it.
I suppose (as I've read from others experiences with staff) that it depends on the person who's working that day. I have had no negative experience with staff at this location.
I can not rate the sushi / fish as I have not had it, but for a noodle bar in the middle of a busy mall, it's a great place to go with friends to share a meal and I suggest trying it before you deem the...
Read moreI don't recommend chicken........first time got Mango chicken salad...maybe because it was not the main ingredient but still I think it was around 9 bucks for Mango and chicken and the chicken Not good and mango portion was small.
But one good time was the soup. Or PHO noodle was good...probably the only good dish with chicken.
The third time I went I decided to try this Sushi Burrito....or actually fourth time (third time I got Salmon) so fourth time I tried the Sushi Burrito with Chicken it was awful ! when I ordered it....I asked the girl if I could get half coco chicken ( just in case I did not like it) and half Teriyaki in my burrito she immediately said no. So I chose Co co chicken, it was awful !! The guy cashier was nice but I think he was new so the girl was helping him. Anyhow, while they made my burrito the coco was not ready..... so the older lady put the burrito aside.....she premade mine with ( I created) with cucumber, carrot, roasted pepper (which was not roasted), and roast onion (again, not roasted), mango, and I asked for tiny kimchee on the side ( she did a good job by the way). I did not choose too much crunch (only green onion, cilantro, and extra nori ). While my CoCo was cooking (the older lady already put it aside) and younger man (the new cookÉ) took some of the nori off. I was a little pissed since I paid 14 bucks ( I got burrito plus one coke) so I told him put the Nori back on. I mean....all I got was Carrot, cucumber, peppers, onions, mango...how cheap can you be...to Take my Nori back off ( I guess I did not choose all the crunch) only Nori and Green Onion and since crunch said unlimited I chose 3 times the Nori....but when the guy cook took it back off I said, Hey and he put it back on. Good think I did not choose more crunch or it would have gotten soggey while waiting on chicken. Anyhow for 14 bucks....the chicken was not very good. It tasted stale. I suggest to never get the chicken burrito ( sushi) only soup is good. The Sesame Vinegarette was ok (pretty good) but I asked for sauce on side in case I didn't like. I also asked for Chipotle. the Chipotle thank god I put it on the side was also awful. It tasted like a sugary ( or sweet and sour with some half roasted Chipotle) maybe just get regular soy sauce blend ( I think its called Poke sauce) or Sriracha Mayo supposed to be good. Anyhow, just bad tasting chicken and for 14 bucks ( with coke) I could have gotten a better meal at the regular burrito place...the real Chipotle place. So never try Chicken burrito at a...
Read moreI went to Square One for lunch and to buy a new apple charger for my girlfriend. I recently got my wisdom teeth out and decided to get the beef don as I felt it would be the easiest to eat. Zero issue with buying the food. The issue was with the cooking staff. There were two cooks up front, a brown and asian man. I had zero issues with the asian man at least from what I saw during the time I was waiting/watching them cook my food. However, I watched the brown man pull his mask down and sneeze onto his hand while standing over some of the pre cooked food in the silver containers. I was already disgusted but I gave him the benefit of the doubt that he would wash his hands. I was severely mistaken as he proceeded to grab tongs and continue to handle food with the hand he just sneezed on. After seeing this and highly doubting that he would wash his hands unless told so, I yelled "Hey, are you going to wash your hands!?" he gave me a dirty look and said "I will, I will." He then proceeded to RINSE his hands with ONLY WATER. Mind you, he was also wearing a blue glove on his left hand which he also just rinsed in water rather than changing. He then put a clear glove on his right hand and continued to work. I thank God that the Asian man was the one to cook my food rather than the other guy. I'd like to emphasize that this review has nothing to do with race and everything to do with sanitary cooking practices. I used to work as a line cook and what this man did is absolutely disgusting and unacceptable. benefit of the doubt, maybe he was having and off or busy day and it slipped his mind to wash his hands. If you do come to eat here, make sure to actually watch the staff...
