Le Canal — Restaurant in Montreal

I read reviews about Canal for the past while and how good it is so we decided to try it out for the first time Saturday evening. We were four and had 6:30 reservations. No alcohol is sold at this restaurant and it isn't BYO either and not having asked any questions when we called, it was a surprise but still not in any way a deterrent so be aware of it is all. We were sat down and not knowing the procedure waited for around 10 minutes without any service or bread 🍞 brought to the table. So we asked people sitting beside us what is the story and they said customers stand up and go to the fish counter and order what they want, get a number , and wait for it to be brought to be the table. We had a side order of salad, a side order of fries, 2 orders of mussels, an order of the salmon plate, and an order of the fish and chips plate. The fish and chip plate has options of cod, halibut, or talapia. The cod was chosen. One can ask for half fries and half rice with the plate rather than the one accompaniment. Although the ambiance is not restaurant style but rather somewhat cafeteria do not dismiss this excellent dining experience. Every plate and side was fresh, tasty, delicious, and packed. The sauce for the mussels was flavourful and just the right amount of spice. We all wished we had a nice baguette to dip in it and wipe it clean. The fish and chip plate was crispy, light, and flakey. The salmon plate was perfectly done with a nice crisp on the outside and so tender and juicy on the inside. I was excited to try this place with my middle eastern mother who was looking for good fish in the West island. Everything was very fresh but it lacked the restaurant ambiance. We called ahead to reserve a table, we came in and sat down quickly. To order you have to go to the fish area to choose your fish and place your order at the counter, there is no menu except online. It was our first time so we ordered a bunch of plates from the menu. I later saw that no one else was ordering like that. Most people were ordering whichever fish they wanted and then shared fries, rice, salads, etc.....the price was extremely reasonable. The calamari was probably the freshest and best I ever had, the fish n chips aren't at all pub style fish and chips, more like deep fried pieces of fish, you can choose from Basa Basa, halibut, code and sole. Again, everything was very fresh. I would go again but I would order differently. Almost all our plates wether it was french fries, fish, calamrie, rice, shrimp all had the same spices on them making everything taste similarly, I found that a little boring. A pitcher of water was placed on our table but ordering and paying for everything is done at the main counter, all our waitress did was bring the food to us, never asked if we wanted anything, not even water. It's our first time ordering from Restaurant Le Canal. I've been seeing people go in and out of this restaurant and I wanted to try their food for a while now. I ordered for take-out and the little time I was in the restaurant, I was greeted by the lady at the cash with a nice warm smile and she was very kind & polite.

We ordered the Grilled Sea Bass (it comes with rice & salad) and the Octopus Salad. ALL I CAN SAY IS THAT MY MOM LOVED LOVED LOVED THEIR FOOD (she's very picky when it comes to food from restaurants since she is an EXPERIENCED chef), but she was the one who told me to give them THE BEST RATING possible and to do it right away because THEY DESERVE IT!!! 🌟 The salad with the Sea Bass was DELICIOUS!!! The fish was grilled to PREFECTION and the Octopus Salad was out OF THIS WORLD 🌎 (it even had some herbs and sesame seeds in it which is a great surprise)!!! 😁

Although the place was PACKED (pretty sure it's because of the GREAT quality of their food), they OVER DELIVER!!! Also, the cost of their food is UNBEATABLE!!! DEFINITELY recommend this place to anyone looking for an AMAZING SEAFOOD restaurant. We will definitely come back for more!!! BRAVO TO THE STAFF!!! 👏🏽 👏🏽 👏🏽
