I visited Pistachio last weekend because I was craving a dessert. The saleswoman, although polite, didn’t seem able to give me a proper recommendation when I asked what I should try—she simply said everything was good. I decided to go with the “trompe l’oeil,” which, as the name suggests, should be a dessert that deceives the eyes (something resembling a fruit, or in this case, a pistachio).
Please look closely at the photo and try to spot the pistachio. What I actually got was a shell of white chocolate filled with a liquid substance (with pistachio flavor of decent quality) and another slightly thicker pistachio-flavored layer.
From my experience with other “trompe l’oeil” desserts, they usually have a certain complexity of textures and flavors. This one did not. It was overwhelmingly sweet and monotonous, with no crunchy element or well-structured mousse to balance things out (as the photo also shows).
If it fails to deliver both in terms of appearance and taste, I can’t consider it a good dessert. The flavor wasn’t awful, but it was extremely sweet—the dominant taste being white chocolate. I wouldn’t return to try other products, especially considering I’ve paid $12 before for a dessert of excellent quality, while this one cost between $16 and $20...

Read moreSo I stroll into this place called Pistachio, thinking I’m about to enter a nutty wonderland of pistachio ice cream and cakes. My friend orders their fancy pistachio-shaped cake and it arrives like a dessert goddess: dripping with pistachios, syrup doing its seductive dance, basically a Michelin-star performance on a plate.
I order the exact same thing, expecting a slice of heaven. Nope. What I get looks like it lost a bet, a naked, sad little cake with zero pistachios, zero syrup, zero love. Like they said, “Hey, no tip, no glitter!”
Here’s the kicker, the cake was chilling in their fridge, ready to go. No magic tricks, no chef gymnastics, no secret sauce. Just pure “we don’t give a damn unless your wallet’s open.” So I guess tipping is the new seasoning? Should’ve brought a sprinkle jar of cash!
Next time, I’m just going to hand them a tip upfront and say, “Make it rain pistachios, please!” Because apparently, the food tastes better if you pay for the decoration show.
Avoid this place unless you’re into paying for invisible service and second-class dessert treatment. Pistachio? More like...
