What a neat little place. The Golden Pagoda's decor features a golden pagoda, exposed brick, Burmese landscape photos, traditional marionettes, large east and north windows covered in climbing plants and fascinators. Takes me back to the old 80s Chinese restaurants. It has the classic chairs, tables and water glasses.
I was recommended the Nan Gyi Thoke. Which is a traditional coconut/egg noodle soup with crunchy bean. It was tasty, and probably the least spicy traditional dish. I'm no fan of cilantro, but even that was lightly added and gave the dish more depth. My picture is mid-dining, pardon.
They provide chili sauce on the side of each dish if you want the traditional spicy kick. It's too bad I couldn't try the MontHinGar, the national dish of Burma. They were sold out, which is an indicator for fresh ingredients.
I also scored a couple spring rolls, which were superb! They looked short, about 2/3 of what I'm used to, but they were thicker too, and tastier than others I've had, there was something in it to give a unique warm flavour.
The food came fast and hot. Cool place, go check it out!
The washroom could use a bit of work, it follows...
Read moreGolden Pagoda is quite possibly one of the most unique dining experiences one can have in Saskatoon (it's not like there are Burmese restaurants on every corner). Putting any novelty aside, the food is excellent and stands on its own. I have had two separate dreams about the spicy eggplant and coconut shrimp curry. I have tried literally everything on the menu and can assure you it is ALL good.
I have been going to Golden Pagoda regularly for 15 years and if this place every closes I would spend another 15 years in mourning.
The family that runs the place is so friendly and the owner always makes us feel like family. The food is reasonably priced and you can't get anything like it anywhere near here.
General advice: Upgrade to coconut rice, get extra naan, try something you haven't had before, go up a notch on the spice scale(which is between inexplicably 2...
Read moreVery good and very authentic. I ordered the stir fried noodles, the coconut noodle soup, and the Burmese beef curry. Of all the three dishes, my least fav is the coconut one, surprisingly. It was just bland. And when I was there, the diner was empty, and the owner played vid loudly on his phone. I understand that it's a mom-and-pop store, but loud noise definitely didn't enhance my experience. The dinner portions are huge. The curry portions however are not exactly huge, but they are filling. The Burmese beef curry dish was really really good. Rich flavors. Slightly bit of spice, and slightly bit hint of sweetness here and there from the coconut rice. Very enjoyable. It was a pity however that I didn't get the chance to taste the traditional Burmese fish noodle soup. I was there 3 times, and either it was out, or the owner didn't make it...
