Food was fantastic. The server Jeremy was terrible. He didn’t introduce himself when first coming to the table. “We don’t have any specials today so you know the drill”. We ordered our drinks, appetizers and mains at once. When we got our appetizer he dropped it on the table and walked away. Then went to grab our drinks and decided to have a conversation with his co workers while holding the drinks for about 2-3 minutes. The door coming out to the patio had a horrible squeak and he continued to stand in the door way chatting swinging the door back and forth.
Between appetizer and main we were never asked if we would like another drink (which we did) we almost wanted to ask another server if we could get a drink but hoped he would come back. When we got our food (After him standing in the doorway again, holding our plates for a good one to two minutes, chatting with his coworkers in the squeaky door )he told me he mistakenly ordered my dinner as a kids order. He did not apologize but asked if I wanted him to get a larger portion ready. I said No , it wouldn’t be at the same time as my husbands. I told him to not bother. He then said “ you will be fine right? it's the same but smaller”. We then ordered drinks to eat with our meal and finally got to eating our food. The food itself was fantastic, but we never got our drinks until after our food was done.
I am so disappointed in this restaurant as I work and live in the village and would want to come back as frequently as I could on date nights with my husband, but I will never step into this place again. I don’t usually complain about service, but this was ridiculous And to top it off, we were never comped for the fish and chips that were mistakenly ordered in the wrong size and our meal was $120 which we would’ve happily paid if it was correct. Going out for dinner is a luxury these days and I don’t want to feel like I am bothering my waiter when...
Read moreThe Canoe and Paddle has a great small town feel to it. The food is excellent and slightly different than regular pub fair found in Peterborough.
The big sell is the large selection of craft beers on tap. I don't believe any other restaurant in the area (save for McThirsties) has such a diverse selection of excellent beer.
The events and live music are really good. Neither my wife or myself generally seek out live music in a restaurant and most often experience it by accident. The two times we have had live music at the Canoe and Paddle we were quite impressed. The volume is fair and respects that people still want to have conversations at their table without screaming at each other.
Trivia night is a great time but show up early or you won't find a seat.
The big minus for the Canoe and Paddle is how cramped it gets with a decent dinner crowd. They do their best at getting everyone to a seat at the expense of ease of movement. It would be great if they were able to expand into an adjoining building.
Edit for summer 2021: Since just prior to the pandemic it seems that they've had big issues getting food out in a timely manner. In summer 2020 we waited an hour and 45 minutes to get our dinner which was a real problem with a 1 and 3 year old. Recently summer 2021 we waited just over an an hour from seating to food on the table.
Doesn't appear to be a server issue at all as they were on the ball and buzzing around often. Food is excellent but the wait is pretty bad still. Hopefully this gets rectified otherwise we will be avoiding...
Read moreWe came here on a long weekend Monday, around 3pm. There was a little bit of a wait but nothing more than expected. The patio was great for the us and the dogs and the server even got someone to bring out a bowl of water for them so they didn’t swelter in the heat which was very sweet of them.
The waitress did inform us they were out of the nachos and most of the chicken items as it had been a really busy long weekend. I mean it was annoying but understandable. We ordered ceaser wraps and asked for the chicken from the sandwich to be put in there and they agreed! The food came quite quickly. I got my food and there was a hair in it. After I attempted to tell another individual who worked there (they rudely said they have to help someone else and walked away) I finally got to tell the waitress. She did ask me if I wanted some thing else as they didn’t have any chicken left on the menu. But then told me that they are all covered in the kitchen possible implying it was my fault. She then said she would take care of it. I said ok no worries and didn’t not eat the wrap but instead just ate the side and had half of my husbands food. When the bill came she took off 2 dollars for the hair in my food. 2 DOLLARS. I paid for a meal I never got or even eaten. I was so disgusted by the service, in this day and age when eating out is a luxury you would assume an establishment would take the item off my bill or at least just charge me for the side poutine and not the wrap that I...
