Review: This morning, we went for a bike ride along the Humber River Recreation Trail in the Old Mill area. Quick tip: park for free at Etienne Brûlé Park.
The night before, I was researching restaurants on Google and noticed a spot with an incredible 4.9/5 rating right near the trail: Bellona Jane. Even better, it’s a vegan/vegetarian restaurant. Since I’ve been craving good vegan food ever since my friend closed his place, this was an easy choice. A few clicks later, I had a table reserved for 12:30 pm.
We wrapped up our ride around 11:45 and, not wanting to wait, I called the restaurant. The owner picked up, happily moved our reservation to noon, and we were set.
When we arrived, we were the first ones there. Our table was ready with a jug of water in the center, and we were warmly greeted and seated by the owner/chef, Johnnie. He’s a great guy - friendly, patient, and happy to answer all our questions (including a couple of special requests for my sliders).
The menu looked too tempting to hold back, so we ordered a feast for lunch: Carciofi Fritti, all three types of sliders (two Portobello, eggplant, and “mestball”), Plant-Inspired Caesar, Pappardelle Bolognese, Sofia Pizza, Chocolate Chip Brownie, and Apple Fritters. We also tried the mango and pineapple Italian sodas, which were a huge hit.
Food highlights:
Eggplant Sliders: The focaccia bread, lightly drizzled with olive oil, was fantastic. The fresh tomato sauce in the eggplant sliders was outstanding and fresh.
Carciofi Fritti: My kids were hesitant about the mini artichoke hearts, but once they tried them, they couldn’t stop.
Plant-Inspired Caesar: According to my kids, this was the best Caesar salad they’ve ever had. Enough said.
Pappardelle Bolognese: Fresh, flavorful sauce paired perfectly with the soft, refreshing noodles. The kids especially loved this one.
Apple Fritters: Warm fritters dusted with cinnamon, topped with vanilla ice cream and caramel drizzle. Definitely an indulgent, delicious finish.
