Tried this place after visiting downtown on a Saturday afternoon. Location is unassuming inside is a long small restaurant with small tables. Fairly clean. Staff is friendly. Menu has an interesting selection of Katsu items (fried pork or chicken cutlets) and some udon and appetizers. Price is a little steep averaging about $23 for a plate. It’s not a fancy restaurant. Options with their full katsu plates consist of a brown sauce with options to go mild or spicy or extra spicy. I opted for extra spicy and I’m not sure what I was expecting. I have eaten at several Asian places and spicy means spicy. This was not it. The brown sauce is slightly sweet no heat at all. I’m still giving it 4 stars because portion sizes were huge. The pork I tried was super tender and the crispy coating was very crispy and light - was actually delicious. The sauce while not spicy at all I actually was ok with it. We also tried a fried chicken/cheese plate was yummy. I was not a fan of fhe corn that came on the plate. Maybe people will like it but it’s corn and Japanese mayonnaise. I wasn’t a fan. Also served finely sliced cabbage with thousand island dressing. The...
Read moreI have been here twice and both times have not disappointed.
The first time I got the Brown teishoku with milk sauce. While you wait, they give you a small dish of cream soup. There is pepper on the side to season to your taste. When the dish arrived it was quite massive. The dish could feed two people to the point of extreme fullness. The sauce has a tomato heavy flavour and is sweet which suits the cutlets nicely. I highly recommend getting some sort of spice level for the sauce though. Both chicken and pork cutlet were done perfectly. The flaky exterior was very delicate and crunchy. With all the groves, it holds/soaks up the sauce very well.
The second time I went I got just the brown katsu. I decided to get a medium spice level which turned out to be a better experience as it complements the sweetness of the sauce nicely.
For both times I would rate them as 8.6/10
The atmosphere of the restaurant is very bustling. Tables are usually all filled up (at least when I went on hoth occasions) and the seatings/tables are quite near each other making the restaurant look a bit of a...
Read moreUpon entering Downtown Brown Katsu, I noticed a slight restroom smell, which was a bit of a letdown. However, the staff were incredibly quick and efficient. While their speed was impressive, I did wonder if they were overworked. I wasn't a huge fan of the fact that the cups and plates were plastic. That was a small disappointment for me. On the bright side, they served the beer in a perfectly chilled glass, which was a nice touch. The best parts of the experience were definitely the food and the service. The pork in the cutlet wasn't super thick, but the portion size was generous and very filling. The breading was perfect—it didn't peel off and stayed crispy throughout the meal. The sauce was also great. Overall, the food was fantastic and the friendly service made for a very satisfying dining experience. Overall: Despite a few minor issues, Downtown Brown Katsu stands out for its amazing food and fast, kind service. I'd recommend it if you're looking for a...
