Sorry for the late review. Fellow parents with kids will understand the delay, but I have something important to share about our experience.
On October 1st, 2024, my family and I had a very disappointing experience at Buk Chang Dong Soon Tofu. My wife, parents, and I arrived at the restaurant around 3 PM with our 5-month-old baby in a car seat. The restaurant was nearly empty at the time, as shown in the photo I took, and we requested a corner table to have more space for the car seat.
To our shock, the male waiter rudely refused our request and insisted that we sit at a smaller table for four, despite there being several empty tables for six available. We kindly explained that we needed the extra space for the baby and also to order more dishes, but he was adamant and showed no willingness to accommodate us.
This was particularly disheartening because my wife has fond memories of dining here during her college years a decade ago. We used to be regular customers and cherished our experiences here. However, after this incident, we will never return. The staff’s lack of empathy and unwillingness to accommodate a family with a small baby is unacceptable.
The weather was very windy that day, and after being refused a suitable table, we had to carry the heavy car seat with our baby to find another place to eat. Fortunately, we went to the "Korea House Restaurant" nearby at 666 Bloor St, and they were very kind, offering us a big table where we had a great time.
Buk Chang Dong Soon Tofu is clearly overrated. Let's not eat here in the future and instead try the one at the next corner! This restaurant has no regard for its customers, especially those with young children. I strongly do not recommend Buk Chang Dong Soon Tofu. There is no warmth or hospitality here for families with...
Read moreIf you're looking for Korean comfort food, look no further than Buk Chang Dong. This place with its neon green sign is hard to miss. Their consistent soft tofu soup makes it quite a popular spot in Koreantown. I find myself coming back often as it's a family favorite.
There's more menu items but we always order the soft tofu soups, which come with rice in a hot stone pot. I prefer the kimchi soon tofu with beef and pork, and there's also dumpling, seafood and vegetarian options at any spicy level that you can handle. Side dishes brought forth are always the same: kimchi, bean sprouts, sweet beans and pickled radish which are simple yet satisfying. When the bubbling hot tofu stew arrives, crack open and drop in the small egg for extra umami. The multi-grain purple rice is scooped out of the stone bowl by a waiter (and he will add water to presumably clean the stone bowl of leftover rice). This distinct rice provides a good base for the hearty and flavorful tofu soup. The soup bowl may appear small initially but there's plenty of silky tofu and other goodness in that stew!
BONUS: after chowing the stew and purple rice, the rice water in the stone bowl is actually ready to consume, in case you still have appetite post-meal. That's the fun part as I found the rice water goes really well with the side dishes! No one's going to judge if you go all the way and finish it too.
Over the years, I've been to pretty much all of the Buk Chang Dong's in the GTA. This is one of the original locations but the tofu soups seems fairly consistent at every other location, which is definitely a plus when you're just seeking a warm bowl of...
Read moreI came in with my mother and sister today. I used to visit this restaurant multiple times during my college days . I came in after several years excited to make my mom and sister try the restaurant while talking about past memory. Restaurant was empty . 2 tables had 2 people each seated and served . I requested the server if I can sit in the corner table . Keep in mind it the corner section has a 4 seater and a 2 seater. He asked how many. I said 3 so we will sit in the 4 seater . He refused . I asked him why can’t we sit there in the corner when the restaurant is empty? To which he literally turned his head and started whispering quite loud and obviously nothing nice in his language ( sounded like he was cursing) . It was loud enough for all 3 of us to hear and he rolled his eyes. He then took like 15 minutes to take our order even when everyone there was just eating and he was doing nothing but wipe spoons in the corner right next to us. Usually servers come to each table and put water in the rice bowls( like I mentioned I have come Here multiple times and I see him do that to others) . He never came to us even when he say our rice bowls were empty. He was rude and abrupt. I hope management sees this. The servers used to be so sweet and gave great service and even the owners back then were amazing. It’s sad to see how much things have changed. The servers represent the restaurant and that particular server who served us today at around 4:30 to 5:30 pm was horrible . Obviously 0 tip but owners should teach their employees...
