We visited Halibut House on Lawrence and Morningside on a Sunday afternoon and were pleasantly surprised by their $12.99 haddock and chips deal. We decided to give it a try, and we are so glad we did because the experience exceeded all expectations!
Food & Taste
The haddock was perfectly cooked, with a light, crispy batter that wasn’t greasy or overwhelming. It had a delicate crunch on the outside while remaining tender and flaky inside. The tartar sauce was the real highlight—it had just the right balance of creaminess and sweetness, complementing the fish beautifully. We’ve tried tartar sauce at many fish and chip places before, but this one stood out as one of the best we’ve ever had.
The fries were excellent as well—fresh, golden brown, and cooked to the perfect crispness. They weren’t overly greasy, and the portion size was incredibly generous. In fact, the servings were so large that we could barely finish our meals. It’s rare to find such value for money these days, and we truly appreciated the hearty portions.
Service & Atmosphere
Beyond the food, the service was outstanding. The lady who served us was incredibly friendly, attentive, and welcoming. She made sure we had everything we needed, checked in on us at the right moments, and made the whole dining experience even better with her warm and cheerful attitude.
The restaurant itself is spacious and very clean. There was plenty of seating, and the large windows allowed natural light to pour in, creating a bright and comfortable atmosphere. Even though it was a casual spot, the environment felt inviting and well-maintained.
Final Thoughts
Halibut House at Lawrence and Morningside is truly a hidden gem for fish and chips lovers. The food quality, portion sizes, pricing, and customer service all exceeded our expectations. It’s rare to find a place that checks all the boxes, but this one definitely does. We will absolutely be back, and we highly recommend it to anyone looking for a delicious and satisfying meal at a great price.

Server Winston was extremely rude, dismissive and top level argumentative. He does not listen and delivers what he wants then proceeds to argue with customers talking under his breath. We are a group of 6 friends that visit every week and spend over $150.00. He always appear to be in a bad mood and has no people skills. He walks away before the order is complete. Its not the first time he has done this but it is getting progressively worse each time. A number of other customers shared the same bad experiences about him. A total of 10 of us will no longer return because we don't want to have to deal with this individual any more. Cindy is extremely polite and it is always a pleasure when we do see her but unfortunately she is not there on the weekends. Too bad because she has great customer skills. Always a smile on her face. Hope that this situation can be rectified...

Service is excellent. And it's all so tasty. You will enjoy the meal but the tendency is to overcook the pieces of fish. Also, the lack of choice. Only three types of fish all with the same category.
There is no trout, or salmon or whitefish. . . . For instance. It is one area, they can improve greatly. It is worth a visit or two, every month. It's a good place to bring out of town visitor
Second review, the update.
I just made an official review visit. Things are even better. They reduced the cook times slightly and the over cooking problem seems dealt with. This is a good sign for any restaurant or retail outlet. They are working to improve. ... For what its worth, they may serve you plates of fish, but as crazy as it sounds the cup of coffee they serve is the best in the area. Better than Star bucks, Better than Timmies, Better than McDs, Better...
