Tl;dr, original glazed are THE BEST donuts you will ever have, but needs to be fresh off the grill.
You're probably wondering why they taste so good fresh, and there are two reasons, the first being the donut temperature. The donuts pass through a glaze waterfall at 120 fahrenheit. The donuts/glaze cool off as they are removed from the grill and placed in a box and it is during this short window of time that they are prime for eating. The second factor is the use of the glaze itself. Without the glaze, these donuts are meh. The glaze gives the donut properties of a cloud, light, fluffy, and the icing providing sweetness, crispness and texture. I have tried many "gourmet" donuts from specialty bakeries, and while they serve good donuts, they are made extremely heavy and bready (some bake them instead of frying) most likely to accommodate the amount of toppings some of these donuts will have. Krispy Kreme glazed hot off the grill is still the very best donuts I have ever had.
Here's what you shouldn't do: You shouldn't wait to eat them at home. By the time you get home (30mins after purchase), the donut has cooled off enough that it is past it's prime time and temperature to eat. The texture of the deep fried donut changes during that time and it becomes slightly heavier and less crisp. The glaze has cooled to the point that it is no longer fresh and crunchy but is starting to become stale.
If you keep these overnight, the next day these donuts start tasting kinda bad. They feel extremely bready and heavy, and even after a quick visit to the microwave, it is a pale representation of what it could be even fresh.
In addition, the fresh, untouched glaze is part of what makes the donuts so special. I tried their donuts without glaze and dipped in granulated sugar and they were meh. I tried a couple other flavors, and adding on chocolate, strawberry or any other flavour on top of the glaze just makes it too much. Long story short, don't get anything except for original glazed (maybe try one or two other flavours yourself so you can...
Read moreWe waited for about 45min in line outside before we were able to make an order. Honestly we got pretty lucky with the weather too, there was plenty of shade and it was breezy.
We decided to try out this new Scarborough location on a Friday because they offered chocolate glazed donuts on certain Fridays of the month.
We order a 1 dozen pack ( 6 original glazed & 6 chocolate glazed )
It was definitely worth the wait when we realized how fresh the doughnuts were! The original glazed were so warm, fluffy & melted in my mouth. Absolutely delicious! The chocolate glazed honestly tasted a lotttt like the original glazed but with a hit of cocoa powder taste. It was nice but not amazing. I don't think I would come rushing back for the chocolate glazed to be honest.
The price point was also great ($11.25 for a dozen ), and the customer service was amazing!
COVID Precautions: Many people in line were wearing masks or at least had masks in hand. There were red lines spray painted on the sidewalk to ensure social distancing which was really nice. There was a security person at the front doors allowing parties in 1 at a time who was also opening the door for guests. Inside there are stickers on the ground asking people to stand spread out but once it came time to order, the stickers were not really enforced. I noticed that when your order was given to you after you paid the gap between customers was decreased and they unintentionally squished customers together because they were handing us our order and moving up the person behind us's order. I honestly felt pretty safe until the point of payment and pickup. I understand it's busy but I also think it's important to enforce social distancing within the store too.
For anyone interested, the inside of the restaurant is open for takeout orders only. There is plenty of parking as well but the aisles are pretty narrow...
Read moreI have never been to a Krispy Kreme store before, and only have ever tried their original donut while they had a sample table in Costco twice. My friends have had the donuts from Krispy Kreme before.
The parking lot is small, not a lot of spaces. Inside the building, there is a rather long lineup for the donuts. There is also a window in which you can see through to see how their original donut is being made. The conveyor belt moves along the way, showing you how they proof, cook, and put icing on the donuts.
There is a display case of many different flavoured donuts. You pick and choose your donuts from there. Or you can buy yourself a big box of the Original Donut, and they take the donuts that are hot off of the conveyor belt. Literally, the freshest donuts ever.
We choose our donuts (choosing to buy two boxes of 12 donuts, essentially we each get 8 donuts of our choice). We get a variety of donuts, such as the Oreo Cookies and Cream Donut, Strawberry Donut, Original Donut, Apple Cinnamon Filled Donut, Strawberry Filled Donut, Kit Kat Crunch Donut, Peach Cobbler Filled Donut... To name a few.
We found a place to rest and we ate some donuts. The donuts were super soft and light, fluffy, bouncy. We all ate 3 donuts each. We noted that the donuts weren't too sweet, the donuts were lightly sweet, not too heavy or cakey. The filling inside the donuts were also light in sweetness, not overpowering or anything. Those were seriously the best donuts we have ever eaten.
We compared Krispy Kreme donuts to Tim Hortons donuts. We can see a very large difference between the two donuts. Tim Hortons donuts are heavier, cakey, thick, and full of straight sugar. Way too sweet, overly sweet, truly overpowering. And compared to Krispy Kreme donuts... Well, I've already described it above.
Truly... Krispy Kreme donuts reign superior. Will be going again to get our...
