UPDATE TO THE REVIEW: Tried the jerk chicken with rice and peas. 4 out of 5 stars. Tasty and tender chicken. A little bit hot - as it should be - but not so much that you can't taste anything else. That's why I don't eat suicide wings anymore. Rice and peas were fine.
It was the sides that made it 5/5 stars. Coleslaw was good, not your Ziggy's brand coleslaw. Some other cabbage and corn, good too. But sweet potato and pineapple! Where else do you find that? That's what got me excited. I would eat these five sides alone as a salad, without meat or rice.
I enjoyed this more than the chicken roti I had (see below). Hopefully it has improved?
Also, friendly service. Nice people. Had a good conversation with the manager. Not an argument, not a confrontation. Just two people discussing cuisine.
My opinion of JTIG has gone up. I'll go back.
ORIGINAL REVIEW: Had a curry chicken roti. It was okay. Not bad (food rarely is), but not good and not great. It's something different than burgers, pizza, burritos, shawarma or falafel. But for curry and roti, it just wasn't flavourful enough. It needs more spices/seasoning. The chicken was a touch dry. Maybe it was a little overcooked? The dhal puri seemed fine. And I think there should be more meat and potatoes, maybe 1.5x, especially if I'm paying $14.
I'll probably go back and try another dish. Maybe their jerk chicken and rice is top notch? I don't know. I like to give a place more than one try before passing final judgment. But if JTIG wants me to keep coming back, I need more flavour. Even though they're conveniently located in my neighbourhood, what I tasted was not good enough to stop me from driving farther in search of...
Read moreStopped in there for a quick bite and wasn't disappointed at all. We came in right at 11 am. The place was really clean, well-lit, very inviting and comfortable.
We went for the Jerk Chicken sandwiches and decided to get a side of the JT fries. The service was friendly and quick. Both sandwiches were made on coco bread. While the coco bread was seen being warmed up on the grill, it was still a bit cool when I bit into mine. However, this was a personal preference and did not take away from the experience at all. The Jerk chicken was juicy and tender, well seasoned and had a great array of flavours with the slaw on the coco. There was a pinch of heat, sweet and great textures. The portion was decent for the cost of the walk-in special (drink and sandwich under $7). We were not disappointed at all and felt this one was better than another chain down the road. The JT fries were perfect, the fires are just your standard run-of-the-mill fries, but what made these special was the seasoning on them. That seasoning added a great flavour and just took them over the top. The key to the fries was the sauce on the side, it hit so well and you taste that lime cutting through with the seasoning on the fries, perfect. We watched a few others come in for the bowls, it wasn't very busy at the time, but we came right at open when they were still prepping. The menu is pretty straightforward and simple, but great options and customization are available based on what you order. Overall this was a great little spot to visit, highly recommend it. Seeing some of the very very few negative reviews, I don't know what they would expect, but Joeys IS doing it right for a quick-service island grill. We will...
Read moreI'm happy to see a quality Caribbean option now available in this part of Eglington east.
First off, the service is great - very happy and welcoming staff at the front.
Secondly, although this place is small, its comfy and cosy with a clean and modern decor.
Lastly, the food is DELICIOUS! I had a taste of the curry chicken and it was yummy. They also have a nice variety of Caribbean dishes. I ordered the jerk chicken with mac n cheese - super yummy.
The only thing about my meal that I had an issue with was the level of spice of the Jerk Chicken. I LOVE spice and I put hot sauce on almost all my meals....so heat/spice/pepper is a part of my life, however, as delicious as the jerk chicken was, I found it to be over the top spicy. In fact, it was so spicy for me that I will not be ordering it again in the future. Perhaps Joey Turks could consider taking the heat down by 40 to 50%. This might allow it to be more palletable to EVERYONE and not just people who like extreme heat. After all, keep in mind that this part of town...and this plaza attracts ALL sorts of people and not just Caribbean folks who love extreme spice. Just some helpful advice for this new...
