My 94 y.o. mother & I had an early dinner here; it was a very hot day, so neither of us had jackets, or anything to put around her for warmth. The restaurant was genuinely cold -- but for my mom, it felt like a refrigerator. She sat there rubbing her arms and clasping her coffee cup to try to get warm. Finally, I asked one of the (food) runners if any of the staff might have a sweater they could loan, for her to put over her shoulders, and she came back with a big, thick Moxie's jacket, which did the trick. All the staff we interacted with were very friendly and helpful.
One complaint is that it was very noisy - not so much the slightly loud music, but the ambient noise was very unpleasant (poorly designed space, acoustically) - I had to half stand up and lean over the table so that my mom could hear what I was saying to her (and she has 2 hearing aids, which were set for a "noisy place" so that should not have been necessary).
Our food was excellent; my mom had the Blackened Chicken Burger, with soup instead of fries (a nice option to have) and I had the Thai Curry Prawn Laksa which was one of the best bowls of noodles I have ever had (which surprised me - I live in Vancouver, the Land of Noodles, lol). The ingredients were fresh, the spice level was enough to clear my sinuses (lol) but still pleasant and flavourful. I only have a couple of "issues," mostly, that it is called a PRAWN dish, yet there were only 3 actual prawns - and several shrimp, which, due to their smaller size, were overcooked (the larger prawns were perfect). I also would have appreciated it if the lime wedges were served on the side - preferably with some extra bean sprouts, chilli oil and Thai Basil, which is pretty standard in most noodle-oriented restaurants back home in Vancouver.
We shared the Salted Caramel Cheesecake, which was pretty good (for context, I am a former fine-dining pastry chef), but a touch over-baked and I found the crust, while a nice change from the typical Graham crumb offering, a little course (too chunky). Also, frankly, the blackberries and berry coulis served with it were out of place; not the best flavour match (the tiny fresh orange sections were on the mark, though). I was very glad I asked for it on the side, as it normally is plated UNDERNEATH the cheesecake, which would have 100% ruined the dessert for me. I it were one of my dessert creations, I would have served it with either a white or dark chocolate garnish or ganache and a few raspberries, or, candied &/or toasted pecans and caramelized apple or pear pieces - perhaps with a bit of candied ginger - with a little crème anglaise.
Certainly, I would eat here again though! (My dessert bar is almost...
Read moreThere is hardly any value at Moxies and the vibe is simply ghetto. I brought my wife here for her birthday (December 24) which is also Christmas eve and it was a big mistake. For the price you pay, the quality of food makes absolutely no sense. An example of poor value, parm fries are obviously made with frozen processed precooked french fries, they taste ok but there are fast food chains you can go to where they give you fresh cut fries and turn it into a poutine for literally $5 as apposed to their $15 approx price. I took my wife here and her food was under cooked (raw chicken) so instead of offering new food, a refund or a substitute they offered to reheat her undercooked food...what? That would be a huge insult to anyone and it should not even be uttered as an option. What also upset me is the fact that this resturant prioritizes online orders over dine-in guests like they are some ghetto food chain. Even cheap fast food chains, when they get too many orders, will turn off their online ordering system but moxies instead decides to close their kitchen off to dine-ins early and have other dine-ins on a waitlist (with lots of tables empty), to wait over two hours to be seated and recieve mediocre, poorly prepared, nocare food. A pasta dish here can cost $25 for cheap and bland ingredients with no care put into it, yet the best Italian resturant in the country (Don A.) only charges $18-$32 for theirs, think about that. If it was good, I wouldn't care if each dish was $150 but it wasn't even worth $10 to me. People go to a restaurant to enjoy their night, if they don't enjoy it the resturant has failed in their mission. You pay money in exchange for enjoyment. Regular or subpar food could easily be made at home. Furthermore, the manager needs to do a better job of handling bad situations. No one should ever feel like a manager suspects you of wanting a free meal, moxies isn't even close to being all that. There were also atmospheric issues as Moxies was freezing cold in the lounge area, I wanted to sit in the dining room area but we lost that seat to someone who came after me (same party size and we were seated after them) despite being ahead of them on the waitlist. Atleast half of the people dining had their winter jackets on, absolutely rediculous. They also had their fire place off and sports highlights on their tvs running highlights from games that were played days ago...how fun... all in all I would rate this place and the experience less than what I did if it were possible and unless things dramatically change, I will not be back. I am no fanboy, if its not good I won't go, if it is good I will go but this was not even...
Read moreWalked in for dining (2 ppl) around 7pm yesterday, restaurant was not busy, it took a few minutes for a hostess to come out and seat us.
A Blue Moon wheat ale was ordered on draft, first thing noticed was no orange slice included on the rim, no big deal, but upon further inspection the colour of the beer was a very dark amber vs a bright orange, there was no "head" and appeared to not have any carbonation, smelled off and finally tasted to confirm, the beer had gone bad. No problem, these things happen, it did however take our server quite a bit of time to come back to take our food order and to obviously replace the Blue Moon with a (bottled) drink.
Food was ordered, which included a French dip sandwich and Vindaloo. The food took a while, which was odd seeing as it was not busy in the restaurant. Food arrived, grabbed a French fry, it was cold, again, it's not the end of the world, moved on to the sandwich to discover it too was cold, opened the sandwich to inspect further and the centre was still fridge temperature cold, with slightly warmer edges but the meat also looked off in colour (greyish) The au jus was just barely warm.
At this point, with how much time has passed both people decided to return all the food and go somewhere else because what, is one person going to eat and be finished by the time a new dish is made and brought out? And again it took the server a while to come back to table, note that both dishes were not being consumed and were placed at the edge of the table.
Manager was requested, issues were explained, and the bill with the two consumed drinks were requested as we were moving on to somewhere else, the manager did graciously comp the bottle of beer and the pop - which was definitely appreciated.
It appears that there's a significant lack of oversight going on at this location, from the top down, it may not last...
