I had heard good things about this place, so decided to go here with my boyfriend, brother and sister-in-law as it was close to our houses. When I walked in, I was intrigued by the board games they had in the front area and made a mental note to come back to play games some time.
We were seated in the back and had a look at the menu. There were some nice hearty dishes on there, and the waiter told us about some tasty specials (including a prime rib meal for only $20). They had quite a large beer selection as well. The problem with the food and beer menu was that they didn't have a number of things on the menu. It wasn't just that they ran out for the night, they no longer served some of the items. If there's a number of items that you don't have on the menu anymore, to me that's a sign to print new menus. Further, my sister-in-law wanted to try one of the specials, but when she ordered we were told that they didn't have any left. We went to dinner between 6 and 7pm, so prime dinner time. We were surprised that they would already have run out of one of their specials.
We started off with the nachos to share. It wasn't as large as the nachos you would see at some bars, but it was exactly what we needed. They tasted great, especially with the corriander in the pico de gallo (my fave).
When the mains came I was pleased with how big the portions were. There definitely wasn't a shortage of food. I had the chicken pot pie. The pastry was nice and flakey, the the chicken and vegetables inside were in a tasty sauce. My biggest qualm, however, was that it wasn't hot enough for me. It was warm when I first started, but by the time I neared the end, it was cold. I like my food coming out very hot, so that it's still warm when I'm finishing up. The prime rib dinner that my brother had looked really good, and I would probably get that next time. I had my eye on the yorkshire pudding.
It was my boyfriend's birthday that weekend so I asked the waiter to bring out a special dessert for him. I was able to choose whatever dessert I wanted to put a candle in, which was nice. They had a berry crumble special, which is what he wanted, so I was happy when they still had some left. The waiter told me that they had run out of one of the other desserts.
Overall, I was pleased with my experience at Stout and would go back again. While I think they need to update their menu if they have things that are permanently off of the menu the food was good and reasonably priced. Hopefully next time it'll be...
Read moreAugust 2021: Sad what has happened to this "used to be good" Irish Pub. A friend had not been and wanted to try it. No Irish stew, no Shepherd's Pie but they do have nachos...sigh. And bangers & mash? Dream on. For a main course we ended up by having highly overpriced poutine topped with sliced beef. So what's the attraction? The patio of course but with winter around the corner, not much else.
July/2019: This restaurant seems to regularly strive to improve itself. Lunch with my sister and from Gin on the rocks, ice tea made to order (less sugar,) to exceptional food including a delicious cheese cake, lunch is truly a treat. The Dubliner in Paris! with its shaved beef sirloin and Shepherd's Pie are simply exceptional.
2018: Been away for a while and recently went for dinner before the crowds came in. Was going to order the Irish stew but am told it has been taken off the menu as it is too "similar" to their Sheppard's pie. You're kidding right? But she is dead serious. Order the steak at 17 dollars. Arrives with no vegetables and cold like it has just come out of the fridge. The maple cheese cake is more base than cheese and needs two coffees to gulp down. Thank goodness for the beer. Oh and forget about calamari but you can get deep fried sweet potatoes. Whoever changed the menu messed up big time. You're an IRISH pub for heaven's sake...or was anyway.
JUNE 2017: The wings are a hit. Even at a medium heat level, you're throat will clear. However my over easy eggs come as firm as they could make them.
JULY 2016: New or improved items prove a success. Shepherd's Pie, Onion Rings, Haddock (still need a side dish) and even the Perogies much,...
Read moreA Regular Gem in Downtown Toronto!
I've been a frequent visitor to Stout Irish Pub in downtown Toronto for quite some time now, attending approximately once a week with my Euchre group, & it has consistently been a delightful experience.
What stands out the most about Stout is the consistently fantastic taste of their dishes. I can confidently say that I've never had anything here that didn't taste great. From classic Irish pub fare to their specials (different dessert special each week), the flavours are consistently on point.
While the menu boasts great taste, it's worth noting that it's somewhat limited, especially for those with dietary restrictions. It's advisable to take a look at the menu ahead of time to ensure there are suitable options. Despite this, Stout remains a go-to spot for our Euchre gatherings.
The staff at Stout Irish Pub is nothing short of INCREDIBLE. Not only do they provide excellent service, but they also have an impressive ability to remember everyone's names & drink orders. It adds a personal touch that makes each visit feel like a welcoming experience.
One of the other highlights is their outdoor seating area, perfect for enjoying the summer weather. It adds a wonderful dimension to the overall pub experience.
In conclusion, Stout Irish Pub is a gem in downtown Toronto. If you're seeking a reliable spot with great food, exceptional staff, & a comfortable space for gatherings, this is the place. While the menu may have its limitations, the overall experience is worth it. I highly recommend Stout to anyone looking for a friendly and enjoyable pub in the heart...
