A Journey Back in Time at Vesta Lunch OG
My recent visit to Vesta Lunch, nestled within the heart of Toronto, was an experience that one might describe as stepping into a time capsule. From the moment I walked in, I was greeted by an ambiance that seemed to have been preserved from decades past, with its classic diner aesthetics, reminiscent of the golden era of diners. The red and chrome decor, the clatter of plates, and the hum of conversations create an atmosphere that is, in all honesty, immaculate in its execution of diner vibes.
The food at Vesta Lunch was what one might term as standard diner quality. There's no pretension here; it's all about serving up comfort food that's been a staple for generations. My meal included a burger that was cooked to a comforting, greasy perfection, paired with fries that were neither too crisp nor too limp, striking that delicate balance that only a seasoned diner can achieve. However, let's not get carried away with culinary accolades; it's diner food, served with the love and simplicity that defines such establishments.
Now, onto the seating situation - this is where one might encounter a slight hiccup. The leg room here is, to put it mildly, at a premium. I am not a person of towering stature, yet I found myself subtly adjusting my position more times than I care to admit, to accommodate my knees beneath the table. If you're blessed with height or simply like your personal space, this might be a point of contention. Yet, this perceived flaw somehow adds to the charm, making you feel packed into this slice of Toronto's history like sardines in a can, but in the most endearing way possible.
The service was provided by an elderly gentleman, whose dedication to his craft was evident throughout our visit. It's heartwarming to see someone of his age still manning the fort, with a spirit that matches the timelessness of the place itself. He navigated the bustling space with a keen eye and a warm smile, though, without the aid of a notepad, some specifics of our orders were, unfortunately, lost in the shuffle of the lunch rush. There was a mix-up with my drink order and a slight delay in getting everything we asked for, but these were minor in the grand scheme of things. His effort was palpable, his commitment to service unwavering, even if memory didn't serve as well as perhaps it once did.
In conclusion, Vesta Lunch is a must-visit if you're in Toronto, not for the novelty of its menu but for the experience it offers. It's a place where time seems to stand still, where the food is secondary to the story each chipped table and worn seat tells. If you can overlook the tight leg room and appreciate the genuine, if slightly forgetful, service, you'll find yourself enchanted by this slice of diner history. Just remember, patience and a sense of humor will serve you well here. If you're after a meal that's as much about the journey through time as it is about the food on your plate, Vesta Lunch...
Read moreI’ve been coming to Vesta Lunch with my girlfriend for almost a year now, on average about once or twice a week. I’ve been coming on my own and with others outside of that for about 8 years. Lots of reviewers seem to miss the point of this restaurant, and it’s a shame.
The restaurant is old and a little worn down looking, but that’s the point of it. The people who run it ARE Columbian (as opposed to what another reviewer said) and run it as a family. During the Dundas Street Festival they even run a Colombian-food tent. Hygiene is on par with most other restaurants - when the chefs wash dishes they also wash their hands. The food isn’t always perfect, but it’s made with love and care. The people who run it are a FAMILY and as such, treat their customers like a family as well. At least 3 times now, I’ve been served free food, coffee or drinks and been told that it’s on the house and that it’s because they know my face. One time I left my wallet at home and they said “Don’t worry about it!”
I’m not going to sit here and pretend like the place doesn’t have its hiccups like any other business - it’s not a Michelin-star restaurant by any means. What it does have is an atmosphere that is lost to the modern era, run by a family that loves their customers and treats them like family, and serves food that - just like your family’s meals - are often a hit but sometimes also a miss.
What you pay for at Vesta Lunch is the atmosphere, the experience and, most usually, the great food. What you get is so much more than those three things combined that it makes it worthwhile to ensure that it lives on for many decades to come. It’s 110%...
Read moreWe came across Vesta Lunch, and it seemed like the only place that was open for the morning, aside from a cute small coffee shop and other restaurants that don’t open till noon. We walked in and we were greeted by a lovely gentleman manning the kitchen, he was alone but nonetheless served us well. I ordered the “Eggs any style” as the others picked sandwiches, we were the first ones there so we go our food as soon it was done, started enjoying our food as some people started rolling in for brunch. I don’t know what it is about eating at diners, specifically this one but it definitely made me feel at home, from the cook, to the space and a simple home cooked like meal. It may look like a simple diner but there’s more to it for sure, it felt like my dad was cooking for me when i was a kid waking up in the morning. We watched the gentleman cook for other customers after finishing our own meal and the burger also caught my boyfriends eye, wished we ordered that to go haha. Overall experience, sometimes you gotta pass all the fancy stuff that other places go all out just to make simple meals, don’t be afraid to hail down the cook/servers but be kind, it’s a small space but that’s what gives the diner charm but you also have an option to dine outside the diner during this time. Definitely will come...
