2.5 stars.

I tried. I mean I live 2 blocks away and always looking for a fine sandwich shop with good value. Short answer? This place isn't it.

The good..

Bread is amazing. Like they make their bread on premise and it makes a huge difference to other sandwich shops in the city. I'd give the bread 4.5 out of 5 stars.

The bad..

Re the sandwich meats and fillings the flavor is lacking. I've had a bunch of their specials as well as the chicken and Reuben sandwiches. Nothing stood out. Chicken sand could definitely use more seasoning...And some bright herbs to make the flavor pop. The Reuben was overwhelmed by the vinegar in the slaw. Literally couldn't taste the meat. A hint of honey would've worked wonders.

Keep in mind I'm basing my review on what I can cook at home. And there's nothing special re the flavors that stick out.

Nonetheless the beef dip is simply amazing. The bread again is the star as it soaks up all that jus. So delicious and just one perfect bite after another.

Pricing? Avg $14/Sand for basically the same size as a subway 6 incher?

Now I'm not comparing the 2 companies. That wouldn't be fair. But hey it's tough right now. Living in DT van is EXPENSIVE. If I'm gonna pay $14/sand which costs $2 to make I want more.

Re the place itself? Wow. It's not meant for sitdown service. Small and cramped space. No washrooms. They should be pickup only.

Finally. Service. Guy with the beard is cool. Staff, for the most part is not really engaged. I get it, they're busy working. Etc. But little eye contact. No conversation.. No getting to know you. No my name is _ and what can I do to help u. Service starts with stating your name and engaging customers but I guess that's foreign here.

Finally rhe owner? Seriously this guy needs basic service training. Does not exude any warmth, no smile no engaging in basic small talk. Been there 6 times in the last 2 weeks and nothing more than a nonchalant 'hi'.

My take? Way too expensive for what u get. Service is so important in an industry struggling to maintain pre pandemic sales.

Its unfortunate. I live 2 blocks away and was hoping it would be good enough to dine 2 to 3x a week..Based on the reviews I was expecting more. Service needs to improve. Sandwiches need to be more about the fillings than the bread. There's a ton of lunch spots looking for your business. But for $14/Sand? Sorry but in these times u have to understand. And respect VALUE. And I won't be back...

BEST SPECIALTY SANDWICHES! About $15/sandwich

This is my 3rd time here, so I had to write a review. We usually get whatever is featured on their menu sign, and today it was:

Singaporean Style Crispy Chicken: Strong coconut flavour, with a refreshing cucumber slaw and chili sauce for the perfect punch. I loved the crunchy peanuts inside and big juicy piece of chicken. Very unique and lovely flavour combination.

Grilled Cheese du Jour (their daily grilled cheese): today was pesto artichoke with Havarti and roma tomatoes. Perfectly pressed on the panini, every bite had a good portion and mix of cheese and artichoke. Just super gooey and delicious especially hot off the panini grill.

The ginger ale was also super good, very ginger-y for sure (if you're into that)

It does get super stuffy inside, there's a few bar seats by the window but the circulation is pretty bad with an open kitchen. We usually sit outside (there's 3-4 tables, with a large umbrella overtop). Great in the summers or if you're grabbing takeout. I'd recommend eating it right away though! Also, super super friendly staff, they give good recommendations, and are very nice. Pretty quick serving too. Nothing fancy, just a good solid little shop that does what they do very well. Highly recommend if you're...

Was walking by and saw a guy eating what looked like a great sandwich. Asked him about it, then went in and ordered it. Well, unfortunately I’ll never enjoy another Reuben sandwich again UNLESS IT’S FROM THIS PLACE. I’m a Reuben kinda nut, and I felt like I had never had one before once I started eating this. Great or best doesn’t even come close. The take home meals looked great and regretted I couldn’t eat more with the time I had. I’ve been looking for a “legit” sandwich shop for a year or two in the city, but am only there on business a few times and week and don’t always have a lot of free time. So after trying different places I’ve found online, and researching YELP and a million other places... I just accidentally stumble into this one, and only cuz I saw dude eating the sandwich outside. Very low key, have walked by a bunch and never realized what I was missing. My only regret is, after passing by this place a lot getting my haircut, etc... I realize I’ve missed out on probably a dozen or so occasions that I could have been eating here. I’ll make up for lost time. Do yourself a favour, and just eat a sandwich...

BREAD PERFECTION !! I'm not normally a sandwich person but I have to say this was by far the best sandwich I've ever had in my life. I had the crispy chicken special (recipe changes weekly) and this time it had truffle in it. All the components that were in the sandwich from the house made bread to the sauce to the breaded chicken to the fresh greens inside were super fresh, and super tasty and flavourful. So many times a breaded chicken can easily be too dry or too salty but this was pure perfection. I also had a cruffin that had a delightfully light and fresh filling and an oat milk latte and both were also items I would come back for individually as well. To absolutely nail it on all 3 items is a major feat, and truly a testament to this hole in the wall. Chef's kiss! Will absolutely be back.

The main differentiation for #e is that their sandwich contents are served hot. Unlike the pre-made sandwiches from coffee shops that are grilled on the outside, these are made to order – just like the ones I would make at home. The fresh ingredients and hot proteins make the sandwiches very enjoyable and comfort-food-like. We ordered two vegetarians. The roasted vegetables taste freshly roasted and not re-heated – I hope they are. I selected gluten free bread which tastes like real bread, only I didn't appreciate that the loaf was so narrow. A big disappointment for me was the olive tapenade. While the olive livened the taste, the garlic in the tapenade made me uncomfortable for a number of hours afterwards. But we will definitely be back to try other fillings and salads.
