My first visit on Sept. 22, 2023. We were craving Hong Kong style western food and this place was closest (we live on the eastside) Location was easy to get. It is along Fraser (by 44th Avenue - a corner lot on the westside of street). There was a paid parking lot behind restaurant but we didn't want to pay so drove to a neighborhood street and parked there. We went for dinner and arrived around 8 pm. The restaurant closes at 9 pm. I ordered from their "Hot Pan set menu". The set menu comes with choice of 2 items on list or a choice 3 items from list, and includes soup of the day, garlic bread, rice or spaghetti & drink & dessert. I ordered Ribeye Steak & Jumbo Prawn Cutlet with black pepper sauce, spaghetti & HK style milk tea. The dessert was mango pudding with evaporated milk. I was surprised the meal came with baked potato with sour cream. it was not mentioned on the menu, so it was a nice addition though if I had known, I would have skipped ordering the free side dish of spaghetti (or rice). I had ordered the spaghetti not knowing there would be potato. The spaghetti did not come with spaghetti sauce, it was just served plain (which kind of surprised me as I had never eaten plain spaghetti as a side dish) but i guess I was suppose to apply it as I would rice. The prawn was very fresh and tasty, and large. I think there were 4 pieces. it was deep fried and battered (kind of like panko flakes (?). The steak was thin, but not dry, and had flavour, however tasted better dipped in the black pepper sauce. The garlic bread was not made from usual loaf type bread ..it reminded me of a large type of a bun type bread which had slightly sweet taste to it, although it was buttered and garlicked on both sides. This afterall HK style western food. The dessert was okay. I think the mango could be a bit softer, I thought is was a tad firm). The waitress was friendly and efficient (since they were closing in an hour). Surprisingly, several more customers came in after us and they became quite full. I was worried we wouldn't finish before 9 pm, however, I noticed when we left at 9 pm, people were still eating there. (I guess you can eat beyond 9 pm as long as your order is in or you are in the midst of your meal, you can stay until you finish). However, out of respect, we don''t like to keep staff waiting as they probably worked long and hard that day. The restaurant was half full when we left at 9 pm. I think if they wanted, they could probably stay open even later some Chinese restaurants are now staying open till 11 pm. How I miss the pre-Covid days when you could find a restaurant that opened till 2 am ! The waitress was nice and asked us if we needed a doggy bag. We ended up getting one as iI had leftovers and thought my dog might enjoy a bit of what I couldn't finish.
I would recommend trying this restaurant. It's a comfy, relaxed place with a mix of customers, from couples, singles and friends. Food is up to par and the service is fast and friendly. For 2 people including tax, our bill was around $53.00. We gave $60...
Read moreWow! if i can or i could i would VOTE this Cafe as a Michelin Award Cafe Award! But again most of the times the Michelin Awards is only given to the " high end " or so called Fusion, Expensive Diners. So its sad to see and hear that most locally family operated Diners are not even chosen for the Michelin Awards. Sadly to hear this! For this Cafe! It has been years since i stepped into this diner in early 2000 with my first ex. Now, 2024( Dec. 3rd ) its been over 24 years since i stepped into this diner after all these years. Heard it was closed for some weeks for renovations. After tonight dinner, i have to say it had taken a blow to me in a " POSITIVE " good way. Never thad a set meal combo set with its gigantic portions size of its options from the Hot Plate Menu ( 2 choices to choose from ). Order the Fish Fillet Cutlet with the Chicken Cutlet. ( was aiming for Mussels ) but changed of mine. follow with the mushroom gravy ( choices given ), follow by soup of the day ( vegetables or cream soup ) have to say the Cream Soup was good compare to other starchy and thick gooey, gummy texture soup, toasted thick buttered garlic bread. Very edible toast ( fresh ). This was the not the case. Than of course it follow by its complimentary drinks ( HK Milk Tea ). Not forget the ( which i did not remember it included ) Mango Mousse with Evaporated milk ( custard ceramic cup ) It was good! Just right right ( fresh ). I have to say the size of the Fish Fillet Cutlet and Chicken Cutlet ( was size of the Ping Pong Bat. I was shocked, it was freshly fried with nice golden crust skin ( fresh cooking oil ) for sure! Not like dark, brownish fried items. follow by the 3 pieces of cooked dente Broccoli forlets, and mixed diced vegetables ( carrots, cornbits ). Its worth for the dinner. Will check it out for Lunch...
Read moreThe most genuine Hong Kong type “chachanteng” in Vancouver and the BEST PRICED, especially if you get here before 6 and partake of their tea time menu. This offers FULL COURSE MEALS including soup (the best cream soup if you're lucky and it's cream soup day, otherwise also good borscht or Chinese soup), and drink. The taste is what I come here for, the price is what keeps me happy!
Have of course been coming here regularly even during the past few months of pandemic Covid restrictions; today, we came for the air conditioning - yup, needed shelter from this heat dome! As usual, food was great, the complimentary iced drinks very welcome and service was FAST!! In fact, their waitstaff is always exceptional - practically non-stop running with the huge platters, interspersed with them taking phone orders and handing them out when the patron comes to collect (and as many times as l've been here, I've never heard anybody complaining about wrong orders etc) and all done with a pleasant demeanour and smiles. Please tip your wait staff well when you make it out here!! IMHO , they're just about the best wait staff I've had the pleasure of being served by! And the food remains consistently great - to the point that we eat here at least weekly if not twice/thrice week. And for not much more than if we cooked at home! And did I mention the "wok mei" - that special flavor good Chinese food is imbued with when a great Chef use very high heat/ fire to the point that the wok catches on fire. Impossible to duplicate cooking at home unless you've got good gas range AND no fear of catching your house on fire!! Hmmmm... I guess I AM enamoured by Angel...
