Unfortunately, about an hour ago we had the worst experience of our lives at this restaurant, which we’ve enjoyed around five times before for its pleasant dining and great jazz music. That made tonight’s disappointment even harder. Trouble started as soon as we arrived: despite specifically booking the high table near the kitchen counter to see the stage at 11:30 am, we found it occupied. The server told us those guests had been there since 5 pm and couldn’t be moved, so we had to sit elsewhere. Normally, the guests who want to occupy a reserved table for a later time are always reminded of this.
Our son had just arrived after a 12-hour flight and was exhausted and jet-lagged. The server, Sara, mentioned they were unusually busy. The restaurant seemed understaffed, with only two servers working. We ordered food immediately but waited an hour to be served anything—even our dip and pita arrived extremely late. We were handed the special menu (including grilled octopus), but despite ordering it, it never arrived—apparently the server confused it with grilled calamari. Why offer a special menu if it isn’t available or is sold out?
The lamb chops, usually our favorite, took 1 hour and 15 minutes to arrive and tasted fishy. After the issue with the octopus, we decided to leave without even being able to listen to the band or drinking only 1/4 of the half-liter of wine we ordered. Despite all this, we were charged $15 for the band and they didn’t bother removing the wine from our bill, even though they apologized for the problems. We ended up paying over $100 for a very disappointing evening and ordered pizza elsewhere because we were...
Read moreI walked into this restaurant with two babies and my husband. The lady at the front was pretty reasonable and asked to see my vaccination card when I sat down cause she could see I was struggling with my baby. Then I asked the second girl for a booth (they had two available) she said they are only reserved for big groups. I’m sorry but a mother and a father with two small babies is a big group. When she finally agreed to give us the booth, we sat down. Trying to get our babies settled she came up to our table and said my “tone of voice isn’t acceptable”.. I’m sorry but being in the service industry you should never judge a women that walks in at 8:30 am with two babies. Not to mention, do not come up to my table and ask me about my tone of voice when all I did was look frustrated about putting my babies in the middle of your restaurant around a bunch of people. Babies and children should always be put as a priority at a booth, especially when you have TWO! This server was so inappropriate to come over and tell me about my tone of voice when I never even raised my voice. All I did was insist we really need a booth with our two babies. The owner of this restaurant needs to teach this little girl some respect. I am a regular at this restaurant and so is my whole family. I’m surprised we were treated like that. And to make the situation worse she argued with me about the menu insisting I didn’t know the menu. Like just...
Read moreFriday evenings are busy nights for dining out. There was a group of 7 of us who were visiting Vancouver for the weekend and headed to the neighborhood where Tangent Cafe is located to have dinner. We were actually headed to a different restaurant however it was going to be over an hour wait to get in. So, we wandered down the street and happened on the Tangent Cafe. We were able to get in quickly and 8 outside on their small patio which had heat lamps warming up the areas where the tables are. That in and of itself was a huge draw to this restaurant to be able to eat outside on a non rainy evening and still stay warm.
The food was fantastic! I had the beet salad and added prawns to it which only ended up costing $15. They have a great mix of Malaysian and American Canadian food. Some of the people in our group ordered off the Malaysian menu and raved about how amazing their food was.
The waitresses and Hostess were also amazing! One of the group ordered something with prawns added and they forgot to add them so they not only took her plate back and added the missing prawns, but they also only charged her half price for what it was she ordered because of the mistake that was made.
Overall, I would definitely eat here the next time I'm in the area. Well done,...
