Looks like one of those classic Chinese/HK dessert places but what put me off so much was a lack of effort in communicating about the order with customers from the owner(s). I was having an inquiry about a small change on one of the items, then after a few exchanges, I got the impression that she agreed with me getting another item rather than changing the first one. What was brought out was a mix of the two, so I just thought that was how it was done or the cashier/owner was just confused. I ended up being charged a HIDDEN fee for that misunderstood change and the extra price, to me, was atrocious. Maybe it was just the barrier in language. Maybe I was not clear enough. Maybe it was cultural (no offense, in fact trying so hard now to not feel tiny about my own ethnic that what if I were born this culture I would be more welcomed and I shouldn't have visited being an outsider). But at no given moment was I informed that there would be an extra fee for my dessert (to which if had been communicated, I would find out that she was getting me wrong). I ended up writing this review instead of having an argument with the owner knowing we would have troubles understanding each other, so that is why the two stars were given instead of one.
Okay speaking of the main character, food was quite plain and weird for a dessert. Mango sago was sour at one point of eating. Overall, I wish it were better (understatement) since I am a big fan of these desserts, but the only thing I actually hope for now is not to get diarrhea or some bowel related issues for my regretful late night craving...
Read moreI love desserts at this place so much :) My boyfriend and I are actually crazy about it. We have tried a few other Taiwanese dessert places in Richmond, but we believe this is far better than the other ones :)
I am not Taiwanese or specialist in their cuisine, so I don't know how they are supposed to be done or traditionally done, but I can tell how I enjoyed them. The herbal jelly is always very soft and has bold herb scent and lightly bitter flavor. The taro balls are often served warm and lightly gooey. The fresh taro paste is mildly sweet and tiny bit chunky. I love how they cook the red and honey beans. They are not too sweet and the textures are so perfectly done. The sweet potatoes are quite sweet and so soft that they fall apart as soon as you put it in your mouth. Yet, my boyfriend's favorite is the cooked peanuts! and my favorite is always the barley!
They serve relatively fast and I never felt rushed when I was eating there. It felt clean and taken care of well. I believe that the owners are the ones who are always there, which I really appreciate. I will come back...

Always the same lady running the front (with her husband in the back). Minimum order of one item per person. Debit or cash only.
Grass jelly, fresh taro and mix jelly ($8.45) - grass jelly was fantastic; homemade, slightly herbaceous. Taro balls were warm and chewy. Mango sago ($6.75) - a touch frozen but sago was excellent and the mango was a perfect sweetness. Watermelon grass jelly ($6.75)
Mango grass jelly ($6.95) - mango sago with the addition of grass jelly. Good. Tofu dessert with black sesame soup ($7.45) - not sweet as they don't drizzle any syrup on the tofu. Black sesame was tasty. Almond soup ($5.95) - thick and piping hot.
Winter melon tea with herbal jelly & taro balls ($4.95) - winter melon had a subtle nutty note. Not too sweet. Mango grass jelly ($6.95) Tofu dessert with sweet almond soup ($7.45) - tasty combination.
