This place has good food but a tad pricey for what it is. We ordered the negitoro roll which was delicious but had a lot of rice and little fish. The takoyaki was typical but maybe a bit smaller than what you usually find in Japan. The nabeyaki udon was average. Just some udon in simple broth with prawns and an egg. I hate when the prawns come inside the soup as it gets all soggy. The service at this place is very bad though. They don’t come check on your food and it takes forever to get someone’s attention. There were two of us and we wanted to split the $45.99 bill. We were at the counter and easy math will tell you that’s $23 per person. The girl at the counter kept punching numbers at the calculator over and over again and for five minutes can’t figure out how to split the bill even though I kept saying to her $23 each. It was frustrating to say the least. Average food plus bad service means I’ll probably not go back again.

Hitoe Sushi is a hidden gem on West 4th. It is an authentic Japanese restaurant that has a nice cozy home feel. The sushi is of a high quality but yet reasonably priced. We sampled an assortment of dishes including the Aburi Oshi Sushi (salmon, mackerel, scallop), Uni Ikura Onagi Don, Nabeyaki Udon and Dinner Box Combo. They were all very good but the star of the night for me was the Uni Ikura Onagi Don. These three delicacies offers a contrast of textures and flavours delighting your taste buds. The firm balls of salted salmon compliments the soft, velvety richness of the sea urchin. The sweetness of the unagi adds another dimension that tempers the saltiness of the salmon roe. This Don literally transcends you to the shores of Hokkaido. Highly recommend!

Everything tasted great. We got Mango roll, rainbow roll, spicy salmon sushi, nigeto something, Sabi (Mackerel) sushi, and salmon sashimi. Everything was very pretty presentation, fancy stuff. You pay a premium to eat here in prices, but it is very high quality. The waiting/host staff are all young ladies who speak English well, and the chefs and all staff appear to be of Japanese descent, so it's quite authentic. It's pretty small (seats maybe 20 people?) And a little cramped, low lighting, but I go for good food, not a pretty dining environment kind of experience. I think our bill was probably around $115 tax and maybe tip in three of us, for two 10-pc rolls, two sushis (6-8 piece), and one 6 piece sashimi.

This was my second visit to Hitoe Sushi. The first time I had went, I had received great food, fantastic service and chocolate pocky to take home. I enjoyed the food and was impressed by my first visit and decided to come again with some friends.

We made reservations for six at 7:30pm and arrived promptly. After being seated and our orders taken, we managed to get our food 50 minutes later. We were told that because it was a "big order", the food would take longer to come as it was being made all at once. If my food is going to take 50 minutes to come, it would have been nice to have a heads up from the server or even some small complimentary edamame to keep the hunger at bay.

However, the long wait was not the worst part, it was the service we received from our waitress tonight. As we were addressing an issues with another server about one of our orders, she dropped by with the teapot and asked us if we would like our tea refilled, to which I said yes. She then proceeded to ignore me and walk away with the teapot. She returned shortly to take another order from my friend; I thought maybe she was just in a rush and had forgotten about our refills, so I politely requested for more tea again as most of my party's cups were empty. She replied affirmatively, left our table and never came back. We eventually had our tea refilled by another server much later. As our food had taken 50 minutes to come, it was already quite late by then and the restaurant was winding down, so it wasn't busy or crowded.

When it was time to pay, my friend asked her for the bill, she said yes and walked away. She was tending to another table, a group which I presume were her friends, as they had come in after us and I had heard her greet them personally when they walked in. After she had taken their bill and given them their pocky, she proceeded to clean up their table even though we were still waiting on our bill. It was also closing time so there were no other customers coming in.

We then waited for 15 minutes before we got up ourselves to pay it at the front. While we were paying she pretended that she didn't see us and came to clean up our table. As we were leaving, she still continued to pretend not to see us, and did not say thank you or see us out, even though the other staff made an effort to say thank you as we walked out the door. We didn't get any pocky either, which was odd as the table with her group of friends had gotten them as they left.

While I did enjoy my first visit to this restaurant immensely, this second visit has left a very bad taste in my mouth. If the place was busy I would understand the lack of service, but there were 3 people on the floor working a handful of tables, and even basic courtesy was not provided by our server.

If Hitoe Sushi is reading this, I would strongly suggest that they train their staff better. The food was decent, but not worth the 50 minute wait and crapshoot service...

I've been there previously about 3 times. The food has usually been good, and fresh. Although, going today, with my girlfriend, it was horrible. We were the first ones waiting, and the waitress said it would be about a 20 minutes for a table, and to sign our name. I said okay, and for a good 20 minutes we were standing in the small restaurant (meaning it was quite obvious we were the only ones waiting). After 20 minutes, an older Caucasian couple came in (we are very young looking Asians, but I am most definitely not), and asked how long we were waiting, I explained they said it would be about 20 minutes, and it's been about 20 minutes. At that moment people started to leave. Great. After about 5 minutes, it really took a while to clean one table, the same lady comes and invites the Caucasian couple to have a seat. I was quite shocked. The Caucasian lady, quickly mentioned that we were first in line. She said okay, and brought us to our table. Big mistake so far....

They never came to fill our tea, after asking for the bill, (I normally tip well), I felt the service was quite poor obviously by this point, and I placed the cash and bill for pickup, and they never came. All three waitresses sat at the cashier by our table, and just ignored us. When we left, normally they would say bye, and thank you for coming. As we walked by, they looked right past us, and didn't say anything. We tipped way in excess b/c I didn't want to keep waiting. I'm not going to speculate on why the service was so poor. I just know, I won't ever be going back. Ever. We just left the excess total 25% tip, and well, won't be going back.

The sad part is, I work for a successful food catering company, and hope to never see them on our board of restaurants. I left feeling upset, like no other restaurant has, that I can recall. I guess what goes around comes around. If they gave me good service, and never treated me so rudely, and poorly, unjustly, I would have highly recommended them at our next meeting. Good food, poor ethics, and poor service, and just almost childish behaviour earns my one star. My hard earned dollars are more deserving towards people who treat others justly, not to be judged on their metrics to be...
