This is my local coffee shop, I basically go every day. The coffee is great (I did read one review that the pour overs can be cold, and I would tend to agree- I make a lot of pour overs at home myself, and appreciate they take time to make, but for whatever reason, they are much colder than when I make my own. Maybe things aren't being pre soaked in hot water, or maybe they take longer during busy hours, but worth looking into). Another thing is the variability in the milk based drinks (mainly Cortados and flat whites)- sometimes I will get the most beautiful steamed milk, with tiny microbubbles and just overall delicious. Then the next day it will be some mess of over foamed milk. This is a problem with a lot of coffee shops, but particularly here. There is a huge amount of staff that changes daily, and getting good baristas can be a challenge. An improvement in barista training though might lead to more consistency amongst the staff. The staff are an eclectic bunch, and mostly very friendly. The food here is great- the falafel sandwich is unreal, I love the pain au chocolats and most of all the loaf of sourdough bread (I usually buy the one day old one for $4. They recently started selling 2 day old loafs as well, which seems a bit brazen to me- it used to be there to take for free, and I think it still should). But the bread is honestly the best loaf of bread in this city, it's that good. It would be handy if you could ask for it sliced, but I get that that would be an investment and it's not a priority. The design of the coffee shop is great, the wifi is great, and I enjoy sitting inside and outside for work or just to relax. There is a $5 'drip coffee and pasty deal' available. Typically, the shop decides which pastry. Today and yesterday it said the pasty was the "customer's choice"- however, both days I asked for the pain au chocolat, and I was told it only applied to the muffins. Not a big deal, but slightly irritating. Pain au chocolates are pastries, and if it only applies to muffins, why say customers choice? Overall, a great coffee shop, with lovely coffee beans, but I wanted to give detailed feedback in areas I feel that can...
Read moreI was really disheartened to hear that Jayde is no longer at Matchstick Davie Street, especially given the circumstances, which sounds quite exploitative… par for the course for Matchstick as a company it seems.
Jayde's energy, warmth, and ability to make everyone feel welcome brought something special and irreplaceable to the café
A great coffee shop is about more than just good drinks (especially in the case of Matchstick where they are incredibly average at best) — it’s about the people who make you want to return. Jayde had that rare quality of making every visit feel like a bright spot in your day, something hard to find especially in the service industry.
The rest of the cafe team is also absolutely wonderful, I just worry how long the ownership will hold on to any of them since they seem to be in the business of firing the most incredible people and not in the business of operating quality coffee shops.
Lastly, I miss their old sandwiches; the new ones seem uninspired and incredibly derivative of nearly every other cafe in...
