Oretachi Curry is originally from Osaka, and apparently the curry here uses the same recipe. The restaurant is styled like a traditional Japanese shop and the service also meets the high standards of hospitality that you expect of Japanese restaurants. The menu is very helpful with pictures of all the curry toppings and icons to indicate meat, seafood, and vegetarian options. You can add toppings to the base curry to your liking, and in most cases it doesn't matter which one you choose as your base for the pricing. I ordered curry with natto and okra. I loved the natto and okra together and how the natto made the curry sauce almost creamy when mixed together. The curry itself was very tasty. I ordered regular spice level and at first thought it wasn't hot at all, but by the time I was finishing I noticed some heat had built up. If I wanted it spicy, I would try the hot, but I was happy with regular heat for just a hint of spice to give some edge to the flavour. Don't forget to add pickles from the condiment tray! The condiment tray also had curry powder and a brown sauce (maybe tonkatsu sauce), but I didn't feel like I needed to use either. I see that lots of other reviews mention small portions, but I thought there was plenty of both natto and okra on my plate, and the hefty amount of natto made the dish pretty filling even though I got the small size. I thought the $16.5 price was appropriate. I tried the sweet potato cake for dessert. I wasn't sure what to expect for dessert since I've been to some Japanese restaurants that have good food but then pull out those frozen convenience store cakes for dessert. I think this cake was previously frozen because they told me it would be 5 minutes and when it came out it was very cold (but not frozen), but it was definitely not a convenience store cake! It was pretty good! There was a cake layer and a pudding layer, and whipped cream around the edge, all dusted with cocoa powder which reminded me of tiramisu. The cake was light and a little earthy, not too sweet. From the food to the friendly service and atmosphere, I had an enjoyable experience here and would be...
Read moreI had a cozy experience at Oretachi Curry for a Saturday lunch as a solo diner. It was no frill, flavor-packed, fulfilling meal that keeps me reminiscing for the whole day. Apparently, what makes their curry are special is using a blend of 20 herbs in the base. I could taste the sourness and sweetness - just right seasoning that has me scoop one spoonful after another.
⭐️ Portion-wise, it was perfect for me. They have options for different rice portion, depending on your appetite, but I don't usually eat white rice so I went with the least amount. You can see from my photo that it was a simple katsu curry dish, and every element did their job perfectly. I went with medium spicy and sprinkled some extra spice powder for the kicks. Their housemade pickle has a subtle tangy flavor that adds complexity to the sauce. I forgot what the sauce bottle was but I also had a little bit of that on my katsu. Overall just 10/10 ✨I couldn't believe I finish the whole thing in one seating!
⭐️ Their menu has a wide variety of curry dishes on rice, udon, and ramen, so it surely guarantee repeating visits from me. Being a solo diner helps with the waiting time, and you'll be most likely seated at the counter, which I do not mind. Make sure to put your name on the waitlist because I saw people who waited outside for a while, not knowing there was a list inside.
⭐️ For a moment, it felt like I was transported to Japan. Obviously the staff were speaking Japanese with each other. The couple seated next to me we're also ordering in Japanese and it did add to my dining experience. We are lucky to have Oretachi open in Vancouver! I heard they were featured on...
Read moreThough it wasn't my beloved Coco Ichibanya, I was pretty excited when I saw that there was a new Japanese curry place. I came with my family for the soft opening, and we ordered fried prawn ebi miso curry ramen, beef curry udon, beef tendon curry, chicken katsu curry with extra cheese, and chicken katsu curry with spinach.
Good stuff: The curry itself was delicious, and I like how there are different size options for the curry rice, and a bunch of toppings you can add.
Three spice levels! The 'hot' curry wasn't very hot, but there was a slight kick, which is better than what I was expecting.
They offer fukujinzuke, which is a pickle that curry places in Japan will offer. I love fukujinzuke and like to make a little pickle mountain on my plate. Please try the curry with the pickles!
The noodle dishes were also good; I especially liked the noodles they used in the ramen dish.
The chicken katsu were crispy on the outside and tender on the inside.
Less good stuff: It took a very, very long time for some of us to get our dishes. Hopefully this is only a soft opening issue! The katsu itself was bland and needed more seasoning. I know that it's being served with curry, but the katsu should be able to stand on its own. The tendon was so chewy that my mom couldn't eat all of it.
I'm really hoping they see this review and make adjustments! I'll come back again after giving them time to polish things, and hopefully I'll be able to...
