I have been here twice now, but still need to try a few more dishes. I woukd say this is more of a 3.5 stars, but that is not an option and with COVID19 I don't want to bring down a rating for such a quaint business that may be struggling. Papis is quite tiny, especially in the off season when you are not going to want to sit on their cute little patio. They patio has a great view and I highly recommend in the summer. Inside is cozy with both and tables, suoer decent Denman street watching and they awesome plastic dividers we are now used to seeing. Service is friendly and attentive. They menu has quite a few tasty options to choose from. We started with the Calamari. This is the typical rings and squid bodies type of calamari. I prefer Humbolt squid because it seems less likely to be over cooked. This Calamari dish was mostly cooked properly, sans a few over cooked chewy pieces. The batter was light, which I much appreciated. This is jot a greasy Calimari! Overall I like it, but I was not blown away. The flavour needs work. There are jalapeños in this dish, but they were odd, fried maybe?? Not much flavour or spice to them. It is also possible the odd after taste to the dish may have been from the oil from the fryer. Sometimes, if not changed regularly enough, you get a bunch of other flavors in your calamari that should not be there. Next we had they Tomato and chorizo Mussles. This was quite tasty. I really enjoyed the broth. It was served with Texas toast which I thought was odd. It seems "cheap" and honestly doesn't soak up the broth near as well as a Baggett would. Lastly, we had thr seafood currey. It was $24 and came with 2 scallops, 2 prawns, one small piece of white fish, and muscles and clams (mostly muscles and clams). The curry is very mild in spice, and all thi creamy is lacking in flavour. It is supposed to be Thai style, but it tastes more Indian. Doesn't have that rich, sweet flavour that most Thai curries have. Also, served with Texas toast instead of rice, making it a bit if a waste of all the curry sauce. I thought this dish was a bit over priced for what you get. If u plan on ordering the muscles don't also order the curry. They dishes are too similar and you will be dissapointed. Next time I visit, I will try their prawn pasta and the oyster Kilpatrick (sounds fun). They also have a happy hour 3-6pm, but I haven't...
Read moreSat on the patio with a few female friends when a seemingly belligerent patron, very aggressively started to become abusive towards my table. It was very frightening! The patron clearly high on something and the manager absolutely had no proper protocols in place from the very beginning! To put his other patrons in danger like that is negligible! The manager with a lot of difficulty, finally escorted him out. The server who also tried to help apologized and told us this patron didn’t look right as soon as he entered the restaurant. Again where are the safety protocols in place for a restaurant that operates in downtown??!!! The manager came to our table with an apology and I brought up the fact that safety protocols should have been initiated before serving alcohol to this patron where he gave me some fake lip service to my real concern and absolutely no acknowledgment to make this wrong a right. Instead the server came back to now change the story that this patron was completely “fine” in the beginning and she only served him “2 double gins” and she had no idea what happened! Protocol number ONE: don’t lie to your customers! Customers don’t have stupid written on their forehead! Protocol number two: as soon as this scary situation is dealt with, just say “sorry” the situation wasn’t handled correctly from the gecko! Don’t try to cover things up. Be honest! And Make it right for your customers who are clearly shaken up by this whole ordeal! The staff served alcohol to a patron who was clearly disturbed. Very, very poor management skills especially being in the center of downtown. I do not feel safe to ever go back there again under this type of management! What a horrible experience after paying for a meal that should have been an enjoyable time with my friends in a relaxing, trusted establishment. This is the reason people go out for a meal, to enjoy the atmosphere and have a good experience. At least offer some complimentary bread rolls to acknowledge a learning lesson for your restaurant that came from your customer’s horrifying experience. Well needed training for the manager of this restaurant is an...
Read moreThere were three of us. The first person to put their order of food was completely forgot about. The second order of food came within minutes and I was left eating with two people who had no food( The pasta I ordered tasted like air and the garlic toast was obviously wonder bread from the grocery store). The other person had to waive the server down to even put an order in. By the time we had both finished the food we realize that the first order had been completely forgotten about. When arrived it was clear that the Halibut in the fish and chips had been fried a second time when it had been forgotten about/ not picked up by server. The cutlery had also all been taken away, So when he finally got his food, he had nothing to eat with. The server was less than apologetic about the whole thing and in fact seem to have an attitude about it. Furthermore, I asked for house wine and instead was given wine that was $23 a glass. After all the mess of the food that was the only thing that was checked up on, and I was given another glass of wine, which I expected to be around $10- so my wine alone was over $60 . No dessert menu was offered or any follow up questions about what we may want. The bill took forever to come even though even though we were clearly done. The restaurant was basically empty, so I’m not sure that the server was overwhelmed. We have bad days and I wanted to give her the benefit of the doubt, but the attitude of the whole thing was very offputting. Having brought brought my folks there from out of town for a really nice experience, this was disappointing to...
