My partner and decided to stop by for some sushi, since I wanted to be able to sit down in a restaurant and not just get takeout. When we sat down there were only two other tables, so it wasn't busy at all and we assumed we would get our food quickly. We put in our order about 5 minutes after we sat down and 45 minutes later we had received 1 ebi sunomono (the shrimp tasted awful, almost like it was about to go bad)and 1 beer. Meanwhile around 5 other tables had been sat and received their plates full of rolls. People who came in after us had recieved their food, ate, then left and we still only had an ebi sunomono and a beer. The server did not come by to let us know whether there was a problem with our order, or if she had forgot to put it through at all. So we just left enough cash and walked out without getting anything else. There are so many other Japanese restaurants on the drive that have incredible service and food, I suggest people take their business elsewhere. I'm a server, and if anyone came into my work and didn't have food in front of them for 45 minutes, not only would it be unacceptable, I dont think I'd have a job after that.Never...
Read moreWith the Drive having so many sushi places, this is one of the better ones in terms of food quality. Friendly service, though things you order can be forgotten some times. Very informal, no order to how the food comes out (like most sushi places) so don't sweat that.
The quality of the sushi cuts are consistently very good. I'm pretty picky about tuna (and toro) cuts at sushi places, and I'd rate Saki Maki as being very good, on par with some sushi joints that cost almost double the price. The specialty rolls feature many original ones, as well as "Vancouver specials" that many seem to expect at a Vancouver sushi joint (myself excluded). Favourites include the Alberta Roll (teriyaki beef with cucumber, and tempura tuna on top with roe), and the Asia Dinner Special can't be beat - three items out of a list of dozens for $10 - and it's good portion sizes too.
Saki Maki also have someone who has to be the friendliest delivery driver we've ever experienced - the guy is awesome. Takeout sushi is never as good as in-restaurant, fresh cut sushi, but it's still pretty good as a takeout...
Read moreUsed to adore this place on Commercial. as the combos are a great value. This time was disappointing as the service was terrible. The server seemed too busy on her phone, even though we were the only table besides one other. I had to call out to her to come take our order, and also later to check on us so I could inform her the chicken was raw. Not much of an apology, and I hate it when the server acts as if you’re complaining too much and doesn’t properly apologize for such a cooking error. (I realized I had already eaten one raw piece which was disgusting.) They gave us another chicken dish, but by that time I’d lost my appetite. My sushi roll was great, but my friend’s California roll tasted fishy. Service did not improve, as the server did not bring the bill. My friend had to ask her for it. Have loved this place for years, but I’m afraid our experience lost two customers for good. There are PLENTY of sushi restaurants in Vancouver, so why would I go...
