Recently tried Shanghai Dumpling King via food delivery app. I've heard this place is tiny so no real point visiting in person to eat.
They have a very limited menu offering. Tried the dry noodles with pork, tea egg, and dumplings.
The tea egg came wrapped in a plastic bag. Difficult to peel it without getting your fingers dirty. The bone-in pork was tender and juicy (and good portion size). Noodles didn't have a whole lot of flavour but it comes with spicy hot sauce. Noodles had a nice chew to them.
The dumplings had a crispy bottom with thickish skin. Be careful when biting into these because I kept having juice squirt out whenever I bit into them. You'd think I'd learn after the first couple but i kept having juice gush out when I tried to eat them.
Update June 2024: Visited in-person. Small interior with limited seats. The place was busy by 11:30am on Saturday.
We ordered the Combo D with secret stuffing wonton and also added an order of 12pc small tiger prawn wontons. We actually enjoyed the smaller wontons over the large secret stuffing wontons as the ratio of filling to wrapper was better. They still make some of the juiciest dumplings that squirt everywhere so make sure you're careful when biting into one.
UPDATE July 2024: We've been coming back to visit this place more frequently now. The Fu Min combo is our go-to order now as you get their classic Dumpling King dumplings (be careful biting into these juicy babies) and their small tiger prawn wontons. Everything comes out super hot. Their dry noodles with fried scallion oil and pork chop had nice wok hei. Debit and cash...
Read moreGot take out from here on a Saturday. Not many people in the store when we got there at opening time. We ordered the first combo on the list which comes with 6 dumplings, beef Curry soup and a tea egg. They don't charge for bags here. The pork dumplings were very delicious. Very different from your usual pork dumplings. They were sweet and juicy. I'm not sure how they make them so sweet (it's not just pure sugar) but wow was I impressed. It is on the pricier side of 10$ for 6 but I could see myself having a craving for these somewhere down the road. The skin is the somewhat thick kind but it went really well with the fresh tasting pork. The owners are super nice and they tell you that these are coming from the freezer so it might take awhile to cook.
I personally would skip the curry beef vermicelli soup. It didn't taste much like anything. The beef was kind of overcooked. Not much flavour. Nothing special wouldn't order again.
The set comes with a tea egg and man this egg was flavourful. Sometimes it's hard to get the salty flavour all the way into the inside yolk but they were able to do it.
Would come back for the dumplings and the tea egg if I had a sudden craving for it and was in the area. But I wouldn't come all the way over here...
Read moreCame with my kids. We immediately got two forks for the kids and enough chop sticks that one child could try them -- I appreciated this since usually I have to ask for another pair. They also brought everyone bottled water -- I think they don't have an open for tap and it's included.
I think there were only two people working: a server and chef. They ran it pretty efficiently with a wait list of names and food constantly coming out.
The menu is minimal: there is one kind of dumpling and many photos on reviews here weren't available (beef rolls). We had:
Combo B (dumplings, wonton in broth, tea egg) Dumplings Noodle and pork chop
The dumplings had skin like a pot sticker but juicy inside like XLB soup dumplings. Once they cooled, they were very good but a bit hard it bite in half -- chewy in a way that I enjoyed but others didn't. Kids loved them. The wontons were okay and the broth was plain and a bit peppery. The noodles were the star. Especially with the pictured chili oil sauce. It's flavourful but not very spicy: more like lau gan ma. I loved it with the noodles and I'm not big on spicy. The noodles just come in sauce with pork chop and some green onions, but they were wonderful and the pork was good too. A bit of bone, but...
