The elk carpaccio ($17) is a lighter choice with paper thin slices of lean meat (don’t worry, it’s not gamey) that’s topped with black garlic aioli, puffed rice, and what seems like a lot of mustard seed but works. Eat the carpaccio on its own or on top of the lavash crackers, both create a great snack. The meatballs ($16) and spicy clams ($16) both incorporated a lovely sauce that had us reaching for the grilled sourdough to sop up. While the pork and beef meatballs were large, they broke apart easily and were wonderfully tender and delicate. I thoroughly enjoyed the smoked tomato butter and romesco sauce that covered the spicy clams but found that they could up the chili peppers as its heat just began to tickle the tongue. It wouldn’t be a B.C. resto bar without pizza; Boom & Batten showcases their pizza oven prominently at the front of the restaurant where we watched the chef prepare pie after pie as we waited for our reserved table. The show enticed me to try the prosciutto pizza ($23), which oddly uses a cream sauce as its base yet, when combined with roasted pear and truffle honey creates a sweet and sticky element against the cured ham and peppery arugula. This pizza is made for sharing as it’s also fairly heavy. Of course, trendy restaurants also need to feature local ingredients and the wild sockeye salmon ($36) was a good dish. While the fish appeared to be overdone upon arrival, it was nonetheless moist and flaky. The dish could have done without the rye crisps as it already included blocks of crispy potatoes that could rival McDonald’s hash browns any day. Instead, it would have been nice if the main had another vegetable, other than just roasted beets, to balance out the meal better. This is a long review, visit Gastroworld for the rest.

I always saw Boom + Batten while jogging around and always wanted to dine in there. I went with family and the lady at the entrance gave us Bar seats even though there were empty tables. We didn’t want to spoil our mood so we ignored and sat on the bar. All bartenders were friendly and nice. Servers were gentle and cheerful, but it was funny that they cleared plates without even asking. I still had my greens left in my plate, chips in my friends plate, pizza crust in my wife’s plate and they without asking cleared them which was annoying as we intend to eat those. We were busy talking and they swiftly cleared them all. Roarrrr!! Nice Bartender went to ask if tables to could be given, but the lady at the entrance said we can be given table in 20 mins. but we will have to do fresh order meaning more waiting for the food to arrive. So in 20 mins we could have got the table, but then why did she say when we entered the restaurant at 1pm that we will have to wait till 3pm to get the table? Didn’t she lie? No smile, no emotions just mechanical grumpy conversation. She should be moved to dishwashing. No care for little kids and making them sit on the bar seat when in 20 mins we could’ve been given the table. Very idiotic host. Food was very good but very small portions. Alcoholic Coffee drinks were yummmm but again way too small cups despite the price being too high. Hey! Why not make it a little generous so that customers will return more and more and you will get loyal fan following? Everything was good but making 5 people sit on the linear bar table even though tables were empty was ridiculous. Shame actually. Reflects a lot on the money minded commercial practice rather than care and building relationships… happy with food but not happy with the host. Edit: just checked my receipt. We ordered three Hot Chocolate and we were very happy with the taste and whipped cream on top. It wasn’t mentioned in the menu that whipped cream was 50 cents. Servers didn’t say whipped cream will be charged extra, we did NOT ask for whipped cream, but they added it by themselves and charged us 1.50$. It’s a meager amount but it is expected that either it is mentioned in the menu or told by the server. But when we never even asked for whipped cream, how come it was added to our order and charged too? There’s a lot of discrepancies happening… good food but somehow why aren’t we happy?? Make any excuse, you’re just wrong…

I ordered the 68$ 35 day aged waygu 6 oz ribeye for my birthday..what a mistake..thought I’d get an amazing first time wagyu experience…was not 6 ounces because 3 ounces was pure grilled fat. The carrots had no taste, the brocoincini was charrrd..the potatoes were so whipped they could be served to a baby or to a retirement home. All served on a bed of beef dip juice. I returned my meal and they trimmed the fat and gave me a charred waygu…flame broiled was like licking a bbq..was my bday and the waiter asked if We’ed like to make things sweater and dropped off a dessert menu. I said I just want to go home. Got 40% off and a free 10$ drink coupon. My moms steak and fries was bad to….her steak no taste or seasoning and tough…supposed to be aged…the fries were amazing she kept giving me some while I waited for my charred new wagyu steak! The manager didn’t come over and apologize. Bill for that was 160 and we still tipped 40 and as we left the waiter said happy bday 1 star..I hear though it depends on what you order..save your wagyu $ for somewhere else…my meal was supposed to be med rare..also gave it to me very rare as you see from the pic and you can see almost half was charred fat..more under the rare little top piece. Put on the reservation was a special birthday. Do not expect anything special birthday or a free dessert! I had 5 bites and feel bad my mom paid 200$ for this. I will not go back unless I want some great fries. Update..I called the guest relations manager and she called me back on Thanksgiving and left a message. I called back and just get voicemail and have not been contacted again and it’s Oct 26. I’m still waiting for a call. An online sorry is not enough..guest relations manager?

Food - I ordered one dish. The Îles Flottantes. I was interested in trying a poached meringue and ruby chocolate. The meringue was evidently made with granulated sugar. It had a gritty texture. Inexplicable. An Italian meringue, or powdered sugar could have resolved this issue. If there was one component to the dish that should have been executed well, this was it. The raspberry sauce was tart and one note. The crème anglaise was overly sweet yet bland. The ruby chocolate was too subtle to have any impact against the cream and sugar. Service - The waitress was personable and provided good service. No complaints. However, the Host needed phone number as well as first and last name in order to seat me immediately. Guessing Boom + Batten has had a rash of dine & dash guests. Still, it set the entire experience off on the wrong foot. I didn’t care to argue this with the host, however it all but guaranteed I’ll never be returning and never recommend this restaurant. As a rule of thumb, you shouldn’t ask for any more personal information than is absolutely necessary. Atmosphere - Generic Catus Club vibes indoors. Played the strangest French Jazz Dance Fusion soundtrack. Beautiful location on the water with a great view. Great for tourists if you want to watch seaplanes land, and water taxis ferry folks around the harbour. FYI None of this can be seen from the patio, as the building blocks it. Overall - I should’ve taken the request for my name and phone number as a sign and walked out. That’s on me. And yet, it’s perfectly fine tourist fodder.

This spot is definitely hit or miss and inconsistent in my experience, but when they are on their game, the food, beverage and service is fantastic. The cocktails are inventive, fun and delicious and the barstaff were great. Some of the menu items i tried were hits; the mussels, fried chicken, the boom breakfast. But thats where inconsistency come into play. One morning i ordered the boom breakfast and it was awesome, and the next week i ordered it again and it was completely under seasoned and was missing some of the components it had contained the previous week. Another thing that really dissapointed me was that they even allowed the vegan pizza out of the kitchen. How unappetizing it looks is actually laughable. I understand vegan pizza is not the easiest to make, but the crust in this margarita pizza was like cardboard, the tomato sauce was soaking through, instead of opting for fresh beautiful basil on top it was baked and brown, and worst of all the massive slabs of what i imagine is cashew cheese were cold. My opion is that if its not going to be done well it honestly shouldnt be on the menu. Though i appreciate the fact that the menu is inclusive to vegans, I say take it off the menu or revamp the recipe. If it wasnt in my neibourhood I probably wouldn't have givin this spot many chances, but the front staff are great and I genuinely would love for the place to grow, learn and succeed. Consistency can make or break a restaurant! Food for thought.

The only good thing about this place is it’s location. Beautiful water view, beautiful restaurant. The whole experience was negative. We came as a group of 7 people (2 kids around 5 years old), asking for outside patio table. We were waiting for about 30 minutes, were not even offered water when it was over 30 C outside. Out of about 15 tables that they have outside (didn’t count the exact amount of tables) only half of them were busy. Why waiting so long? Because they had to move two tables together for our big group to have enough space to servers to move around, and for some reason tables with bigger space were occupied by groups of 2-3 people, while tiny tables with little space were free. Why don’t you sit 2 people at smaller table? They didn’t even have food, only drinks. Basically, because of poor management we had to wait for that long, maybe even longer as we were also waiting for food. Food is not good. I’ve never seen so small tuna tartar, it was a kid size, only couple pieces of tuna, the rest is avocado and smth else on top. Pizza is dry, even hungry kids didn’t want to eat it. Only Burger was good and juicy. We ate it all as we were extremely hungry and we left hungry. Didn’t want to order anything else and went back to our hotel waiting for dinner. Never coming back, hopefully it will be helpful for other tourists.
