This was probably the best breakfast I've had in Victoria. After being warmly greeted at the door of this small, but not cramped, cafe, we were quickly seated and an incredibly good cup of coffee soon followed. I quickly decided on the Fuego Benny, with my Wife opting for the traditional breakfast. After a brief wait, I was presented with a plate that looked far too good to take a picture of (and I was far too hungry to worry about such trivialities...).
The Benedict: My first bite of Chorizo, Cornbread and Chipotle Hollandaise was unapologetically spicy. My palate was met by heat, spice, cream and flavour. It didn't sneak up, it wasn't a subtle undertone, it was proud to be spicy and did a damn good job of it. The spice coupled with the creaminess of the Hollandaise was mind-blowing and the heat level made sure you enjoyed it. It is an indescribable combination of flavours, so just go eat one.
The Standard Bacon/Eggs: Two perfectly cooked eggs, a couple of beautifully cooked strips of bacon and two pieces of toasted cornbread anchored a plate that was rounded out with Guacamole, Pico de Gallo and a healthy mound of fresh tomatoes (a substitution from the normal potatoes). It looked amazing, and all I got to sample was the Cornbread and Guacamole, as any other incursion by my fork towards her plate was met by a very disapproving look and a disconcerting growl... I will take this as meaning it was very good.
Everything I tasted brought joy. I will most certainly be back and I will happily recommend...
Read moredelicious Mexican breakfast food -
I found this place through Reddit with a search of fav breakfast places in Victoria, so we are giving it a shot. The decor was unique, cozy, and Mexican xD!
We ordered the chilaquiles skillet, Spanish omelette, and the mango mama pancakes. My husband also ordered a side of hash brown. The pancakes came first and they were five small pancakes with blueberries, mango, and syrup. They were delicious and I think mango was seasoned already as it tasted slightly different than fresh mango.
The waitress recommended the chef's skillet, so we got that instead. It came with fresh avocado, beans, two eggs, and quite a lot of mushed tortilla with cheese. I enjoyed it but I'm not a fan of the texture so much.
The omelette was probably my favorite out of the three dishes. The cornbread that came with it was also interesting. I didn't pay much attention to it at first since I wasn't very big on cornbread, but the crispy sides were really nice, and I guess that's why people on reddit were in love with the cornbread here.
The hash browns were basically fries/fried potatoes to me with some green onion and sour cream. My husband enjoyed it but I wasn't a big fan as it seems super filling. We managed to finish everything with the three of us.
The service was good, and they also refilled my hot water once as well. I don't remember the vibe as nothing was playing at that time. There weren't a lot of people dining there between 10 to 11 am on a...
Read moreThis is for Maria's Venezuelan pop up:
Listen, for the positives, I'm Venezuelan myself and I'll tell you that the food itself was excellent and great authentic quality. I genuinely enjoyed the food and the service was great as well
HOWEVER, for the bad, the prices for the food are simply unjustifiable. I understand inflation is crazy but $18 + tax for a single chicken and cheese arepa with no side or nothing is insane. $5 an empanada that is half the size of my hand is reaching scam territory. And, like, don't get me wrong, these were DELICIOUS, but it really is not the price.
Again, as Venezuelan, Venezuelan food is nothing fancy, it's just dough with chicken or beef, it's the type of food your grandma makes in 20 minutes on a Tuesday morning. They sell Harina Pan at Save On Foods now for like $6, you can make like 40 arepas form a single pack, you can't tell me you're gonna charge $18 + tax (cheapest one) for a single one. This is street food that is meant to be very casual, homey, and quick to eat, its all fried, its not luxurious or "high end." So it boggles my mind why it's priced at such a ridiculous amount.
Pains me to say but I really can't go back just for that price. Again, genuinely enjoyed everything I ate, the staff was lovely. I really do wish the chef and restaurant success. But $40+ a person just to eat casual food and leave hungry was not...
