Recently purchased a Beef and Truffle pie - oh my... Every bite was a delicacy. My strong recommendation 😊

Last time I had a Cornish Pastie this good, I was in Cornwall. Saltchuck pasties are baked on the premises, and it shows. The people who baked these, really know how to make an excellent Pastie - and their Beef with Truffle pies are now added to my list of excellent pies. The beef and truffle was rich in flavour with an excellent flaky pastry. I could not recommend it too highly.

If you want a high quality pastie, I recommend driving past every pie shop in town, until you reach the Saltchuck Pie Company. Here, you can buy a pastie that is plump with high quality, tasty ingredients.

The pastry was just perfect for taste, texture and thickness. The meat content was much higher than the veggie content, and all in all, it was an excellent small meal. These bakers have paid it forward, to earn a well deserved Five Stars. I'll be back.

... and now I am back, having just celebrated my birthday again. I purchased frozen pasties for my guests, and baked them at home (instructions were supplied) I provided nice ketchup and other condiments to enjoy with the pasties. It all went down a treat 😊. My continuing full...

A happy accident

We stopped in to grab something for supper, so we started with the frozen pies - lots of good selections (we grabbed a chicken pot pie for MIL), but the fresh pie flavours were more appealing. I ordered a beef and bacon and my wife ordered the beef and mushroom. We asked for one of the espresso sandwich cookies (like a moonpie, and they were happy to cut it in half for us to share) - and then for one of each of the pecan and raisin tarts. Price came to more than i was expecting, but didn't think much about it.

Got out to the truck to dive into the espresso cookie to find we had two fruit pies instead of the tarts, which explains the higher price.

Beef 'n bacon: delicious! Beef 'n mushroom: also delicious Peach-something (Maybe mango?) - delicious! Blueberry-something - ohmygodamazing Chicken Pot Pie - very good, even though it was gluten free (didn't notice the GF until we got home, but it was fantastic, too)

Will definitely return when i'm in the area. Flaky crusts, meaty fillings, and so much...

Solid place for savory and sweet pies. Tried the breakfast spinach mushroom, mini pecan and full size peach blueberry pies.

The flavors were really good for all of them, but the stand out was the pecan pie, which was caramely but not tooth-achingly sweet like some pecan pies. My partner who doesn't really like sweets ate most of it! Plus, the crust on the breakfast pie and the pecan pie were both generous enough to have a nice bite to them but still managed to be flaky at the same time.

The only 2 criticisms are:

  1. ) the crust on the full sized peach raspberry pie was disappointing (somehow it didn't seem like the same crust as the pecan or breakfast pie - there was too much of it, lacked flavor and was a bit dry)
  2. the egg in the breakfast pie was a touch overcooked, so it wasn't creamy/silky like a quiche, but more like finding hard boiled egg whites mixed in.

So I'd definitely go back, but I'd stick with the individual or mini sized servings. And if they've got it, definitely get...

We were checking out some furniture stores, and Saltchuck was nearby. We had a steak pie and a pepper steak pie. I also ordered a quinoa salad thinking that I would eat more healthily. The pie crust was soft and not crunchy, as though it had been microwaved and not fresh out of the oven. My pepper steak pie was very spicy, instead of just a hint of black pepper like a pepper steak, the pepper was heavy. The pies had more gravy than beef, very soupy, and not balanced with vegetables. The photo of the salad show lots of mustard seeds, a bit too vinegary and aggressive – I had to abort it. The home made apple lemonade was very pleasant. And the servers were friendly.

The last time I ate at The Saltchuck Pie Company, was back in early 2018, when I lived in Sooke a worked around Southern Vancouver Island. I stopped in today, and I was so happy to see they were Open! I had my usual Peppered Steak Pie, served with Mash Potatoes and Gravy! The Missus' had the same with the Pear / Beet Salad! YUMmmmm!!! Absolutely Love It! The Atmosphere is Perfect and It's Clean and Cozy! The Staff are Friendly and the portion is Excellent! If you're looking to do Lunch, hit Bay Street and head towards VicWest. It's on the right, in front of Lafarge Concrete. The view is as Awesome as the Food!
