This was not my first time to this location of Hy's as we are frequent visitors to Whistler and generally speaking this is the best steak house in Whistler (sorry Keg). However, on this visit they just completely missed the mark. Things started out well as with our early reservation we were greeted at the door and promptly shown to a window table in the main dinning room. Water arrived soon after and drink orders taken. After much conversation we placed our orders which included several appetizer to be shared, two Caesar salads one with one as a starter and one as a main and a couple of steaks for the additional entrees. All was well as the appetizers started to show up until the salads all of a sudden both appeared at the same time. Normally this wouldn't be big issue with the timing as I would chalk in up to a timing miscommunication, however Hy's offers table side preparation of their Caesars so given that the waiter prepared the salad and not in front of us where we could correct the timing this is somewhat inexcusable. The salads also lacked the rich creaminess they usually have and came out clumpy. As the meal continued our designated driver was left with an empty glass several times while those consuming alchohol found their glasses promptly refreshed. Steaks arrived one ordered rare one ordered medium rare, the rare steak though pushing the boundaries of medium on the edges was a lovely red towards the centre, though the medium rare was bordering on medium well with little to no pink. The dressing of the potatoes was performed by a bus person and was a somewhat laboured task but was complete... eventually. Beyond the empty glass of the designated driver, dinner proceeded somewhat as expected. Desert was offered, though some time after dinner plates had been cleared as the waiter now seemed preoccupied with chatting up other tables. Desert was ordered including their Banana's Foster, again table side preparation, which was actually done tableside this time... though likely because the cart was left next to our table for the neighboring tables salads. The presentation was lovely with the waiter advising that we film the flambe in slow motion but a few bites in I found myself with a mouth full of paper. Upon commenting on the inclusion the desert was remade sans any bonuses. Oh I almost forgot someone in the party ordered the 'New England clam chowder' which was more like a watered down puree of potato rather than a hearty chowder and as for clam... it was exactly that with only a single discernable clam in the bowl. There may have been more but they would have been pureed to the point of being unrecognizable.
Though the ambiance was lovely, this time around the service and execution was not what one would expect of a meal costing in excess of $400. The general nonchalance of our waiter, the lack of precision from the kitchen, and the failure to adjust the bill for the failures, came together to make this a less than positive experience especially given the price tag and the expectations established during...

I’ll start by saying my family and I have been loyal guests of the Hy’s Steakhouse group for over 30 years, visiting all three locations across BC. We’ve always had high expectations — and rightfully so — given the reputation and caliber of the brand. Unfortunately, our recent experience at the Whistler location was not only disappointing, it was shockingly subpar.
Service was our first red flag. While our server was polite enough, it was clear he was unimpressed that not everyone at our table ordered a full three courses. We had a mix of mains, some shared plates, appetizers and of course, the signature cheese toast — which, thankfully, was the only highlight of the meal.
The Caesar salad was a letdown. It tasted overwhelmingly of red wine vinegar, and instead of fresh parmesan, they used the pre-grated kind you’d find in a plastic Costco tub — not what we expect from a Hy’s kitchen. The tableside preparation, which used to be a theatrical touch, felt rushed and uninspired. Portions were tiny — maybe 15 bits of romaine per plate — and lacked all the care and flair we’ve come to associate with this brand.
Mains continued the downward spiral. My parents ordered the beef medallions, which were so tough my dad was grateful for the sharp knife. Despite being tenderloin, the meat was chewy and bland. The mashed potatoes tasted like unsalted, unbuttered cafeteria fare — absolutely no seasoning, garlic, or richness. The mushrooms were sad little shriveled things, some even burnt.
The beef wellington was no better — small, lukewarm, and flavorless. The pastry lacked flakiness, the steak was forgettable, and the mushroom duxelles had no taste. It’s like the kitchen forgot to use salt and pepper the entire meal. The accompanying sauce tasted both over-reduced and aggressively acidic — an odd, unpleasant combination.
And then there were the two hairs I found in my meal.
We weren’t the only table having issues. Guests beside us sent their meals back twice, visibly upset. At that point, we chose not to escalate things — we wanted to enjoy each other’s company — but we felt compelled to say something afterward.
This meal fell drastically short of the Hy’s standard. Given our long history with the brand, it’s heartbreaking to say, but we’re not sure we’ll...
Read moreI’d like to update this review and say the manager has since reached out and has done a wonderful job addressing our concerns. He has been nothing but kind and professional and I believe he has done everything he can to ensure this scenario does not happen again.
Hy’s has always been a family favorite and a must on every trip to Whistler, however our most recent experience was disappointing to say the least. We ordered a porterhouse steak and the gorgonzola filet both medium rare. While the filet was cooked to a proper medium rare the porterhouses was definitely NOT. This would be no big deal if it wasn’t for how our server, Jennifer, dealt with the issue. When we pointed out we weren’t completely satisfied she leaned in to closely examine the steak, swiped it off the table and walked away without a single word. She returned a few moments later with plenty of attitude about how the “lighting in the restaurant makes it hard to see” and how she took a better look at it in the kitchen and the steak was “very close to medium rare” so she will bring out a new one that’s cooked rare instead. She was extremely condescending and unapologetic, she only finally uttered the word sorry when she brought out the new steak as she was basically walking away from our table. She also did not top off our wine even once throughout the dinner nor offered to tell us any specials such as which fish was available for dinner that day. She also failed to mention the restaurant was out of all bone-in and dry aged steaks due to covid (understandable if it was told in a timely manner), until we had been seated for at least 10 minutes (we already had drinks on the table). Imagine ordering a $90 steak (which we’ve had many times before, not that it should matter) only to be treated like an idiot who needs to be told in a condescending manner that essentially we don’t know what medium rare is. We are happy paying for good food but we certainly don’t appreciate being treated like we’re stupid, the level of service we experienced left a lot to be desired. At least once we received our properly cooked steak it was delicious, so were the...
