What a wild place!!! On the outside the pub looks very pedestrian but step inside and it feels like you are immediately transported into a downtown North End bar. I went to join some friends to watch Game 6 of the World Series. I was immediately blasted by a wave of sound from the "musician" who was singing and playing guitar the same night as what could have been the final game of the World Series. The waitress greeting me could not even be remotely heard over the wailing of the music. With two wildly incompatible events happening at the same time, it is not surprising that a fist fight would break out, but to my surprise, it was between two middle-age women! Before, during, and after trading punches, the most vulgar expletives imaginable (that mostly centered around the female anatomy) were screamed back and forth between the two combatants. Eventually bar staff got involved, one wearing a tie-dyed t-shirt that said "Good Vibes," and restrained one of the women physically pushing her back into her table as aggressively as she pushed them. Thankfully the police finally arrived to break everything up: they handcuffed and removed the woman including taking her walker with them! One of the two waitresses serving us (the one that actually spoke) was clearly embarrassed by all that was happening and displayed a level of maturity completely unfitting to the establishment at which she worked. I like a rowdy time as much as the next person but not to the point where I worry about loosing my teeth! I couldn't imagine what this place would have been like if they were showing a football game instead of baseball! Unless you are looking for a place to really mix it up, there are much safer places in Winnipeg to grab a beer and watch a...
Read moreWe recently moved into the area and were very excited about the opening of this place! We each ordered the burger week special - goose ponds and 1 kids chicken fingers meal. As we watched tables that ordered after us begin to get their food, we were then alerted that our server (Day S according to the bill) had put in the incorrect order. They had brought our child's food out who began eating while waited.. no problem. We then ordered a diet coke after our Ceasars, which we watched sit at the bar for over 15 mins until we had and opportunity to make our server aware, she finally brought over the drink which was very watered down at that point because the ice was completely melted.
The food came about 15 minutes later and everything tasted great. Our server then asked if we had wanted a refill, in which we said yes and those refills never came. As our server got us a takeout box for our kids meal, she proceeds to take the food away that was on the plate to be boxed up (thankfully we were able to catch her before she got to the kitchen). She provided our bill, and after 10 mins of waiting, finally asked if we needed the machine which we said yes. We then waited another 10+mins while watching her walk by countless times before we decided to just pay with the cash we had and walked out.
Overall - food and drinks were great. The service we had was one of the worst experiences I have ever had, and coming from a 20+ year hospitality background, there was no excuse as the establishment was under half filled with patrons and had plenty of staff...
Read moreMe and my wife had a really disappointing experience at The Grizzly Goose. We waited an hour for our food and during that time, no one asked if we wanted drinks other than water or checked in with us to apologize for the wait (we could see they were busy and understand that as a new restaurant, but it is a nice courtesy). I was looking forward to a beer, but that opportunity never came
When the food finally arrived, it was a letdown. I ordered the Shepherd's Pie, and instead of the usual mashed potatoes, they were pressed into a waffle shape. Sounds unique, but it just made them starchy and gluey and hard to eat with the filling of the pie.
My wife has a dairy allergy, which she clearly communicated to the server. Despite that, her wrap came with random bits of cheese (clearly cheddar, as her vegan poutine had a vegan mozza). When we brought this up, the server blamed the kitchen, saying they had new staff and that the food was prepared nearby other dishes with dairy. Not exactly reassuring.
They knocked $4 off the bill, but honestly, that felt like a pretty weak apology for all the issues.
It feels like The Grizzly Goose is trying too hard to be hip and interesting, but it just doesn’t work. The quirky food presentations and the overall vibe might seem cool at first, but when the basics like service and quality are lacking, it all falls flat.
Given the disregard of food allergies , expensive prices and sub par dishes I don't know of any reason we...
