Cozy, laid-back pub atmosphere. Food is excellent value, and without a deep fryer in the building, it's reasonably healthy and you don't leave smelling like used fry oil like in other small pubs. Bar rail liquor is reasonably top shelf (eg their bar rye is Gibson's), pop/mix is from a can and not a gun, and they have a great selection of beers on tap, and even get special stuff seasonally from the local Half Pints brewery.
They've since fixed the issue of it being ridiculously hot inside in the summer, so the one reviewer who was fixated on the sweatiness/temperature is no longer as valid. There's still no patio, but it's at least a very comfortable temperature to hang out in. Your girlfriend will be fine.
Service is generally great until it gets really busy, like most places, but all the interactions I've had with staff have been friendly and pleasant. The music is generally great too, and occasionally tailored to concert-going crowds for nearby shows.
You can rent out the restaurant side for parties, which I've done and it went swimmingly. The location has parking available nearby, and some street parking. It's very close to major venues like MTS Centre or the Burt, making it a great meeting place before events/concerts.
Suggestions: The spinach and artichoke dip is massive and indulgent. The Yellow Dog Platter is a great classic hot dog plate with all the fixings. The Guinness stew is fabulous on cold days. Wash it down with a cider or a pint of Half Pints' St James Pale. Don't order fancy cocktails, this is not a bar to order an appletini and steak tartare. If you come expecting a cold beer and a satisfying sandwich, you'll leave happy though.
You'd be hard pressed to find a better divey-feeling pub downtown, or anywhere in the city...
Read moreOf all the Bars/Restaurants/Taverns I have been to in the last 35 years since I was 17 sneaking in this is the very best, including all my travels and living in Ottawa, Toronto and Calgary. The Owner Greg and his incredible Staff is what makes the most fantastic. A special shout out to Amanda, Ashley and Alicia for always making me feel most welcome. From first-class Management and Staff comes great food, fantastic beverages including Coca-Cola in a can and the best music EVER. There is no better place to stop before or after a Winnipeg Jets game or to watch the Jets game on one of their fabulous television screens. Any sports game for that matter is a treat at The Yellow Dog.
If you are wondering about their love of music is simply have to look at the walls with all the fabulous pictures of bands lining the walls into probably 100+ photos. It is that love that shines through on the music you hear so often when there is no feature sports game playing on the television and everyone is gathered socializing sometimes simply two to a table or in a group that has just met or happy to see each other again.
Since my 50th Birthday on Hallowe’en 🎃, October 31st I have hosted my Birthday Party there with some most wonderful memories and the best service. I love to eat there because the food is, no pun intended, to die for. It is absolutely delicious and I love introducing Friends to The Yellow Dog Cuisine and most importantly Experience. Recently going alone I had made some wonderful new friends and I always enjoy meeting people there which is quite something to say about any establishment.
It is without a doubt in my almost 35 years of going out since my last year of High School in 1984 my...
Read moreThe only reason I'm giving this place two stars is because the food was was really good. However my server/bartender was incredibly negligent. She took my drink order and then went back to the register started texting and talking to other people and then came back with my drink 5 minutes later even though all she had to do is grab it out of the fridge. After she brought my drink I tried to stop her but she walked away too fast to get back to her conversation she was having with people at the bar, so I stared at her with my arms folded menu directly in front of me for 10 minutes before she realized that I was trying to order food but her only response was "oh, are you ordering food?" No apology or anything. After I got my food she didn't check on me at all and never told me that I had to pay at the bar and that she wouldn't bring me my check. I took a picture of her texting behind the bar while I was waiting but won't post it unless asked to by management because I do want to protect her privacy, but they seriously need to...
