A great disappointment considering the considerable reviews suggesting otherwise... I tried the empanada pina and what a letdown... inside was a searing hot lava sauce consisting largely of onions and what I would describe as "specks" of meat. And as for the flavor? Well nothing particularly worth writing about... And then after my tongue's baptism of fire I couldn't really tell.

So while I'm no expert on the intricacies of what would make the perfect empanada, i have eaten plenty of them in my five months of travel in central and south america and I can honestly say this was the worst.

You Chileans could learn a thing or two from your Bolivian counterparts;) there they have a variety called Salteñas and they are so so good. If you've ever been to Paceña la Salteña in La Paz you know what I'm talking about!

Worth noting and a credit to the establishment, the service was swift and...

Serves the best empanadas in Santiago. Been around for well over 100 years, those guys know what they're doing. They serve so many each day that they are the freshest you can find, they haven't been sitting under a glass cabinet for hours.

As you walk into Emporio Zunino you have to go to one of two booths to order and pay for your empanadas and other soft drinks (bebidas). Once you have your ticket you go to the central counter and hand your ticket to the servers who ask if you want to eat in or out and wrap your empanadas accordingly. The best option is to eat at one of the standing benches and watch the busy street go by.

Empanadas that are off the chart delicious. Centrally located at the edge of the historical market, this place offers quick limited menu of empanadas along with some other items like pizzas as well as some raw ingredients in glass cases. The cheese empanadas are the absolute best I've had anywhere in the world. The flaky crust made from puff pastry is perfectly baked with butter and hundreds of layers along with a delicious rich cheese filling. The pinõ (meat and onion) is not quite as good since they use a standard baked crust although it's more traditional. You can't go wrong at this 100 year old instuition in Santiago.

Awesome empanadas. The pino is the meat, onion, egg, olive (with pit), classic Chilean empeñada. It is delicious, the meat cooked to basically a gravy or stew making the inside goopy and hot. This place is super popular so they are very fresh. The classic empanadas are 1200 pesos then they have queso empeñada and a small pizza bread option. This is all they sell other than drinks. You pay at the window in cash then take the ticket to the counter to receive your empanadas. There is no seating only room to stand. This place has evidently been around since the 30s! They also have a counter selling fresh pasta.
