If you walk by, you think it’s a takeout counter next to the sidewalk. Upstairs, it’s quite an enormous and well appointed dining room that could probably seat about 400 very comfortably. The dim sum menu is much more affordable than the dinner menu, however, I’m sure the main courses at dinner can be shared amongst three or four easily. The dining room is extremely bright with windows onto Kings Road, and the tables are set with lovely dishes, cloth, tablecloths, But like most Chinese restaurants, no napkins, so bring your tissue or get some paper towels from the bathroom after you’ve washed your hands. The variety of both dim sum and dinner dishes is extensive, and even a bit daunting to someone for the first time. They started me off with some Jasmine tea, which was a very good quality. After the pot is about half empty, remove the lid and ask for more hot water. I started off with the deep fried spring rolls stuffed with taro shreds and vegetarian shrimp,, which is a serving of three cut in half, with some black vinegar to dip in. Surprisingly they were served at room temperature, much like the takeout counter downstairs. I ordered three dumpling dishes, the chiu chao style dumplings, the dumpling stuffed with vegetarian, squid and spinach, and the Canton style fungus and Omni meat dumplings. All of them were hot and fresh, one of them was served in clear broth, which was flavourful and the portion of wontons extremely generous, although the broth could have been a few degrees hotter. Servers are efficient and deliver food promptly from a rolling trolley. However, I asked for some chilli sauce to add a little bite to the bland spinach dumpling, and would recommend downloading the off-line vocabulary in Google Translate. I was fortunate to have a diner at the next table translate for me. The chilli sauce that they brought was slightly salty and added a nice note. As usual, I washed my hands before the meal to realize that they share the lavatories with the Chinese department store next-door. That would probably be the best way for someone in a wheelchair to access the restaurant. The bathroom was clean and well appointed with soap and paper towels. At the entry, they have signs that they accept MasterCard and Visa, and like everywhere else in Hong Kong take Octopus as payment as well. I used to be a big fan of the Shanghai style vegetarian restaurant when my hotel was in Kowloon and Central, but after Covid when I visited the new location in Causeway Bay, I found the prices higher, and the choices more limited. This is now a much more favoured alternative, and I was teetering on giving them 4 1/2 stars for the food quality. My table was next to a pillar that was missing the stainless steel corner trim piece, however, the design of mirrors underneath light wood gives the impression of space and breaks up the vast expanse into much a more intimate human scale. Chairs are comfortable and covered in a golden brocade fabric, the purple drapes at the window are elegant, the carpets are a bit worn, and the colours a bit off, but the staff are constantly cleaning and sweeping. The temperature in the dining room is comfortable, neither mall, air conditioning, cold, and drafty or uncomfortably warm. I will definitely return, hopefully with three or four friends so that we can order many more dishes, and I will take screenshots of how to ask for soy sauce and chilli paste on my Google translate for...
Read moreI was double charged and they did not care. On a business trip I had dinner by myself, when I approached de counter to pay with credit card the lady was a little anxious and had difficulty to manage the POS. She would just cancel te transaction before it finished because it would not reply immediately. After the third try it started to say that the credit card was not good. She laughed and told me "no money, hehehe". A bold man who was the only one who spoke good english approached and I said I would pay cash but that the credit card was good. I told him that the lady somehow spoiled my card with all those transactions in a hurry but he did not believed me. After arriving to my hotel I saw the charge on my banks credit card statement. So I went yesterday, tried ti explain and they said they would call me. Since nothing happened I went today and I was lucky to find this english speaking man again. He remebered everything and said that they called their bank and that my card was not charged. I showed him my credit card statement on my phone where it said the name of the restaurant and amount charged so he says "well, we confirmed and it was not charged so that is a mistake, call your bank". Then he offered to call their bank again, he made a phone call (in chinese) after 1 minute hangs up and said he was sorry but that the bank confirms I was not charged. How can they know without him providing my credit card details in just 1 minute? I did not buy it. It is only a 110 HKD charge (about 15 USD) so I decided not to waste more time on this but they were very rude as if I was lying. After seing my statement I believe was enough to confirm I was charged and should have given me back the cash payment. Their ignorance was annoying. A good restaurant would have refunded the 15 dollars just to make sure there was no mistake and keep the...
Read moreWe had been before several years ago and rated 3 stars and we tried to visit again recently but ended up walking out. Receptionist extremely rude and unhelpful. When we arrived, just 2 of us, we were told we had to wait, and that we were third in line, that's fine, quite normal in Hong Kong, but after 20 minutes when we had seen many people leave and others just walking in and being seated most of them more than 2 people, when we checked our status in the queue we were rudely told we were still third in line! It would seem that if you call and make a booking or are a regular you get preference over anyone who walks in and waits, maybe we should have been told that when we arrived. We won't be...
