If one likes having meals in the food hawker centres in Singapore, s/he should be interested in having meals in Keung Kee Dai Pai Dong.

The food hawker centres there are famous for the native foods of Chinese, Indian, Malays, etc. (usually prepared in their traditional manner), styles and price.

"Dai Pai Dong" is translated from the pronunciation a Cantonese name meaning food hawker stall, and the food sold there usually is also prepared in the traditional way. The difference between Dai Pai Dong in Hong Kong and the food hawker centre in Singapore is mainly in the physical structure of the centre (stall) that where the 'centres' are built by the government of Singapore with good town planning, whereas Dai Pai Dong stalls become common in early 1900s usually along the roadside around local market areas in Hong Kong without town planning.

As economy started to grow in the early 1970s, the Hong Kong Government started some basic planning and intended to raise the general hygiene standard, it stopped issuing / renewing licenses for operation of Dai Pai Dong in addition to the redevelopment of many areas in Hong Kong, the number of Dai Pai Dong reduced tremendously from several thousand to less than 20 in Hong Kong today.

Keung Kee is located in Shum Shui Po which is one of the oldest areas (in terms of ages of most residential buildings and the residents living there) and low income group living there, it does not sell expensive foods and the quality of foods is just average, however, I like the dish of Spicy Dried Squid on Ice (冰震土尤) as I would ordered that every time I go there. The reason I like going there occasionally is that I could enjoy the food and the environment there freely without caring one's table manner, and at the same time recalling much of scene of my childhood with my...

Quality of food: 4/5 - good rice noodle soup with your choice of topings.  Barbecue pork and pork chop was warm and the noodles were springy with a light but refreshing soup Cleanliness: 2/5 - seating is outside on the sidewalk which is part of the experience of dining here Service: 5/5 - great service food came quick. The server was very kind. Value for money: 5/5 - very reasonable prices for what you receive.

Recommendation:  4/5 - worth a try if you are in the area.  Before 5:30pm they serve breakfast food and do not have the main dishes.  I would recommend coming for dinner after 530pm to have the...

Yes its a traditional daipaidong setting, yes they do serve some good food, yes I like the energy there, I enjoyed the meal.

But I am sure the hygiene condition would startle many people.

Why the heck the eateries in HK are always so dirty, dirty to the extent that they do not even care what you see what they do!

All outdoor seatings. Drivers can easily park on the street nearby. Dirty in the way they process their utensils, how they clear up tables, how they use their dirty hand serve...

Excellent food, fast service and good atmosphere. The food is cooked in two woks literally on the street in a well organized makeshift kitchen, the sauce and spices in between the two chefs on the woks. The waitress didn't fancy what we had decided on and strongly 'suggested' we order some other dishes 😆 Her 'suggestions' were excellent, some type of potato dish and a cashew greens dish, would happily eat regularly. We noticed nearby tables also had the same dishes so were grateful. Would visit again.

Even though Dai Lai Dong is a dwindling eating experience in HK due to poor sanitary condition, lack of AC etc, there's still some surviving stores here and there and Keung Kee in SSP is one of them. It's popular because it's cheap and fast and open all day and night but I didn't find my breakfast ramen soup with 2 choices including hot drink $28 particularly that good or value. There's plenty of eateries in this area that offer more and better choices and slightly cleaner and has AC.
